Thread: How do you create a new Profile (Mac OSX) for the new FF3

  1. How do you create a new Profile (Mac OSX) for the new FF3

I'm taking the plunge and have downloaded the alpha of the new FF3.

I have already installed it, but Not Opened it. I want to open in
Profile Manager and create a new profile. There are too many changes to
risk screwing up my FF2 profile.

OR will it create a new profile and convert information from the FF2
    profile.

No, profiles are stored in the same location, so you will have to open
PM and create a new profile. To do so you need to run a command in
    Terminal:

    In Finder, Go>>Utilities

    Select Terminal

Type in or copy/paste the following:

    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

Note that if you installed Firefox somewhere other then Applications,
the path must reflect that. Substitute Gran Paradiso.app for
Firefox.app. I think the executable is still called firefox, but I can
check on that whe I get home.

Yes, the executable is called firefox. One correction though, its
GranParadiso.app, not Gran Paradiso.app.. So the command would be:

    /Applications/GranParadiso.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

If you did not install in Applications amend the path accordingly.

Actually, if you still have 2.0 installed, the original command would
have worked, as the two share the same profiles.

Make sure to uncheck the box for Don't ask at startup, so you can select
    the appropriate profile.

Its too early for hoopla, its only an alpha. I'm running it right now
on OPS 10.4.8, with no extensions. Its working fine, its going to web
sites, doing what you want a browser to do.

We;ll see more feature changes in the beta versions I am sure.

On 10.4.8. It was a PIA to setup
First the Profile Manager settings would not stick. Because Both Firefox
and GranParadiso Profiles were set up in:
Username > Library > Application Support > Firefox

And if you set to default to whichever. It would open the opposite the
    next time.

I finally cured That problem by setting so Profile Manager window opens
    and you select desired profile.

On my Desktop (OSX.3.9) I don't have that problem Because FireFox
    profile is setup

    Username > Library > Firefox

However; There is a problem with the little icon beside the URL's

    I have 1-1/2 icons.

On the laptop with X.4.8 I don't have that problem.

It is faster than FF2 Though.

Did kill all my Extensions. non are compatible.

I am a Retired Electronics Technician; and the Reference to the Favicon
Being 1-1/2 Actually is more like an out of phase signal.
the universal Favicon is a Stylized circle.

On OSX.3.9 the left side of the circle is clipped then there is a space,
then left portion of the circle clipped appears to the right.

On my PowerBook 17" 1440x900 resolution.

on my Tower Unit G4-500 I use a 17"x17" Monitor (LCD) made by
Mitsubishi attached through a ATI Rage Pro 6000 DVI video card. its
    resolution is 104x768

    This is on FF3

This problem doesn't appear on my 17" Laptop.

Never mind. I am discontinuing use.

Just opening FF3 changed all the HTML icon on my Laptop to the new FF3
    icon.

Just this one change along changed all the files in my Website Directory
for my Organization. This was caused when I ran Interarchy's Mirror
download to update all the html files. Several Hundred. I shouldn't
have had more than 2 or 3.

So its causing more problems than its worth. I might go to it when
    official but not before.

I realise that you're on OS X and I'm on SUSE 10.1, but I've done pretty
much the same under Windows, and I find it remarkable that I can run the
official releases of Fx and Tb as well as 3.0a1 nightlies of both --
up-dated pretty much daily (at least under Linux) without a hitch, and yet
    you're having so many problems under OS X. . . .

I'm not sure why you are having such problems.

I have one machine on 10.3.9, and two on 10.4.8. Both place profiles in:

    Username>>Library>>Application Support>>Firefox

Did you perhaps first set up FF in a version earlier then Panther?

Where did you install GranParadiso? If you installed it in a user lever
folder, it would become the default over the FF installed in
Applications, which would account for the switch in icons.

If you are going to run multiple version of FF on OSX, it is essential
that each have its own profile, and that Profile Manager open when each
version is opened, so that the correct profile is used. Remember I said
do not check the box for don't ask at startup? If you do not, the last
opened profile will open, regardless of which version is selected.

It will kill your extensions, of course, Thats a hazard of testing
builds. I now test these builds in a profile without extensions. The
point is to see how the new version will work out of the box, Extensions
    come later.

Well you have to remember That as with most software developers, they
give MacOS only a cursory glance, where as with UNIX, Linux, and, of
course window are the bread and butter.

Where Mozilla may have 100 developers MacOS might have 1 for those 100.
Strange thing is except for the Mac Interface THe underneath is UNIX.

FireFox on the G4-500. (OSX.3.9) the profile is located in

    USERNAME > Library > Firefox.

As per your instructions I used:

    /Applications/GranParadiso.app/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

    This installed Profile in:

USERNAME > Library > Application Support > Firefox > Profile (salted name)

On this the only apparent problem is on the the universal Favicon.
    -----------------------

    On my PowerBook Laptop17"

I used command above in the Terminal.

    Firefox was already installed in

USERNAME > Library > Applications Support > FireFox > "default"

I used GranParadiso as profile name for the GranParadiso install

    It installed in:

USERNAME > Library > Applications Support > FireFox > "GranParadiso"

    "" indicates profile name.

As soon as I opened GranParadiso, immediately all html, and html, shtml
file icons changed from FireFox, to GranParadiso. and for some reason
dates and Times were immediately change to the instance that
GranParadiso was opened the first time.

Because of this, when I update my Mirror download to my Association's
website. Re-downloaded all the files with changed dates and times.

I can't afford the time to do this, all the time. So I'll just
Discontinue use on my powerbook machine.

In addition to individual Troubles I have the following common problems:

every time I switch switch from on tab to another in the preferences, it
flickers and jumps like it doesn't quite know where to draw the item.

And even though I can go to customize for the menu and the menu items
appear nothing can be added or taken away. nor can anything be dragged
    from one position to another.

The Favicon for Google Menu is so faint you almost can't tell what it is.

The code is cross-platform and is then compiled for different platforms, so
there is little or no truth to your claim.

Indeed, David Hyatt (who I believe is still involved with the Mozilla
Project) worked (and may still work) for Apple and was involved in the
    development of Safari.

The issue, then is either with OS X (which would surprise me) or in how you
    tried to set things up.

    Actually, FreeBSD.

For OSX.3.9 it's BSD Unix Licensed from Berkly.

OSX.4. used FreeBSD. which is licensed from the same community system as
    Mozilla and other products.

Even Terminal uses two totally different systems between the two OSes.
Some commands that work fine in X.4.8 either fail or parially fail in
    X.3.9. and vice-versa.

    For example That command given:
    /Applications/Paradiso/Contents/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

    Worked perfect in OSX.4.8.

IN OSX.3.9 It worked it actually opened the profile manager; but; while
doing so it threw up a bunch of error messages.

When OSX.5 come out since it will be geared more to the Intel Macs I
wouldn't be surprised if the code for the Intel Macs is same UNIX that
    are used on PC's (X86/Xfree86?).

While most of the internal code may or may not be universal. There are
parts of each code related to how Printing is addressed, how things are
drawn on screen, are unique to each system. Mac OSX, Windows, UNIX, Linux.

And this is where the disparity is That's the reason for my comment
above. for every 100 developers working on Windows there may be 1 for
the Mac, And since UNIX and Linux are so close for every 100 Windows
developers, there might be 60-75 for The other communities.

Its just the way life is. Most of the resources go to the platform is
most used. MS Windows is the 800 pound Gorilla, and the other platforms
have to accept the scraps left over.

I played on an OS X machine for an hour or so a couple months ago and found
that the term didn't function at all like I expected it to. . . .

    > For example That command given:

I'm not sure why you'd need to type the whole path; isn't there an
    equivalent of /usr/bin/?

XFree86 and Xorg are just different X11 implementations. I'd guess the
significant difference would be in the kernel, so that it would run under
x86 architecture (rather than PPC or x86_64).

    > While most of the internal code may or may not be universal. There are

But printing isn't handled internally by the app; it's handled at the OS
level -- Fx/Moz/SM/Tb/&c don't have in-built print drivers or spools.

    > [ . . . ] how things are
    > drawn on screen, are unique to each system.

And here I thought rendering tended to start from the first pixel at the
upper left-hand corner of the screen, go all the way through to the bottom
right-hand corner of the screen, and then jump back to the upper left-hand
    corner of the screen.

    > Mac OSX, Windows, UNIX, Linux.

IANAP, but wouldn't these kinds of things -- printing; screen drawing -- be
(low-level) API calls rather than something implemented by a given piece of
    software?

Again, I don't think the claim is particularly either germane or valid.

I've used Fx/Moz/SM/Tb under both Windows and Linux, with little concern. I
know people who use them under OS X (tho' some prefer Safari) without any
problems -- tho', to be fair, most of 'em wouldn't be fiddling around with
    multiple versions. . . .

Safari doesn't suit me. I put it on par with IE.

Safari started out as slightly retooled version of a browser used on
Linux/UNIX. Its my understanding That on the UNIX/Linux side That it had
been patched so many times. Its not even recommended for use.

I tried the KDE 3.2 version the other day I have installed on my G4-500
and it wouldn't even load secure html pages complained about something
    not available.

If there is, I don't know of it. My direction comes straight from the
    mozilla.org directions for opening PM.

I also find the command works just as well on 10.3.9 as it does on
10.4.8, so I am not sure why Phillip had difficulty with it.

Actually, under OSX mutltiple versions are very easy to manage, as long
as you have profiles organized for them. I have both GranParadiso and
FF2 running as I write. Its easy to compare across the versions.

Umm . . . WebCore is based on KHTML, and some of Apple's improvements are
    merged back into KHTML.

First I've heard of that, since Konqueror is pretty central to KDE.

Version numbers of Konq and KDE should be the same. Most recent release is
    3.5.5.

It would depend on what that something is, now, wouldn't it? ;-)
