Gnome GTK file chooser/picker changed in 1.5.0.4 or 1.5.0.3?
Hi
Has anyone else experienced a change in the widget used to handle the
"File > Open" or "Download > Save As" dialogs in Linux? I use RHEL 4,
and Firefox used to use the standard GTK filechooser (which has nice
because it has a list of favorites). I updated to 1.5.0.4 yesterday,
and now the filechooser is very basic and no longer looks like the
standard Gnome filechooser.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is it a bug that needs to be filed
or a new "feature"?
Thanks for your help!
Chris

I forgot to mention that I'm not sure if I was previously using 1.5.0.2
or 1.5.0.3 prior to upgrading to 1.5.0.4.

How did you update? via Mozilla or via a (official?) RHEL repo?

Thanks, Jedi Fans
I originally installed using from Mozilla.com, and I updated from within
Firefox (so via Mozilla).

If you are sure that was all you did, i would suggest reinstalling
it (or downloading the .tar.gz directly from moz and untar), if that
doesn't fix it, post back.

Thanks, Jedi Fans
I fresh installed both 1.5.0.3 and 1.5.0.4 from Mozilla.com, and sure
enough, I see the change happens from 1.5.0.3 to 1.5.0.4.
(I tried posting screen shots of the two different versions of the
filechooser, but so far the message hasn't posted, so maybe the forum
doesn't accept attachments.)

I vaguely recall there being changes to the file picker, but not in the
1.5.0.x code.
Try this:
Go to the URL: about:config
Search for the preference |ui.allow_platform_file_picker|.
Double-click on it.
If you don't see it, right-click on any preference, and select
'New-->Boolean'.

Re: Gnome GTK file chooser/picker changed in 1.5.0.4 or 1.5.0.3?
Thanks Chris
My about:config didn't have that key, so I tried adding it and restarted
Firefox. However, the file picker did not change.
I copied and pasted the preference key from the post, so at least I know
I didn't type it wrong. I also tried using both "true" and "false"
values for the boolean, but neither of them changed the file picker.

I found an interesting comment in this bug -- maybe I'll try posting there:

Re: Gnome GTK file chooser/picker changed in 1.5.0.4 or 1.5.0.3?
This bug fix turns out to be the culprit. Apparently the pre- GTK 2.6.3
file chooser has some annoying bugs, so the team changed Firefox to not
use it. So those of us with an old GTK will just have to settle for the
basic (although presumably less bug-prone) file chooser.
