Fx 1.5 still auto checks for updates when UNchecked
Tools > Options > Advanced > Update tab
"Automatically check for updates to:"
[ ]Firefox <---UNchecked (app.update.enabled value is false)
which then _grays out_ all this next section of:
"When updates to Firefox are found:"
( )Ask me what I want to do
(.)Automatically download and install the updates
[x]Warm me if this will disable extensions or themes
and one would think effectively disabling update checking altogether,
let alone what the grayed out options were left at before UNchecking
auto check updates for Firefox. Doesn't seem to make a difference in
UNchecking auto updates to Firefox and graying out the other options,
as "app.update.auto" is still left at the default value of true.
The grayed out option overriding the option which grays it out.
Upon opening Firefox I was surprised to be greeted with something like
there's a new 1.5.0.1 update and has been downloaded and install to be
completed upon restarting Firefox!
I closed Firefox, deleted the contents of ...Mozilla Firefox\updates\0
folder, but the Update History still say status is "Install Pending".
I'd already manually downloaded 1.5.0.1 to install myself soon, as
I've been doing for years and backing up and/or whatever is necessary
to do before installing or upgrading Moz browsers, and now believing
I'd turned off auto checking/updates it seems I need to go look at
about:config to make sure and Firefox settings don't go behind your
back and do it anyway. Not impressed.

Or perhaps it's one of the other app.update.* default settings that's
responsible, as I haven't looked into which one does it.

This senario reminds me of NS and AOL constantly installing. On a 10M HD
that could gobble a bit of real estate.
I finally got tired of the Update (*Downdate* from all these negative
messages!) and let it start to download and then disconnected our modem.
That seemed to work.
Maybe there is something positive to be said about dialups. ;-) I just
tried to send a graphical joke to a friend. Had success yesterday so
documented the process. This morning when I tried again, practiced to my
self first, it went OK. The did it for real and it failed, I felt the
typical fool and successfully played the *fumble for the Disconnect
button* each time until finally giving up. Had I had cable, which I
dearly want, I would never have know.
Guess that's good news and bad news. :-\

Doesn't grey out here.

Is it greying out for anyone else?

Since you've already downloaded 1.5.0.1, may I suggest that when you are
ready to install it, you first uninstall 1.5 and delete the program
folder (save plugins) before installing 1.5.0.1. There are still some
bugs in the auto install process.

Yeah. In Fx 1.5 for me it greyed out, and still in 1.5.0.1. Here's
a screenshot from 1.5.0.1 under WinXP.

Thanks for the screenshots Chris and »Q«. It was graying out here in
1.5 and still does in 1.5.0.1 under Win2k in usual profile and with a
new profile. I'd previously uninstalled and deleted 1.07 and decided
to start anew with 1.5 after its release.

No worries Irwin, did so and usually do. Firefox 1.5.0.1 is up and
running okay. :-)

Yep, it's (slowly) getting there, and in time I may eventually decide
to go the auto update and install routine.

Searching Bugzilla I found a few mentions of auto check/update doing
so when supposedly unchecked. Having auto check/update as a default is
fine and a good idea as long as it can be disabled and does so.

My mistake. I was using an experimental version, built on 1.4.
Using 1.5, it greys out.
I have it disabled, so I'll see if I get an update.

Some people really resist doing things the easy way. Sigh.

Maybe there is, but I can't think of anything....
Of course, if my phone lines weren't older than me, I might not have
been so much in a hurry for cable.....

Seems to me that is the way it SHOULD work. If you turn off the
updates, then why should you be able to configure what it is to do with
an update it isn't going to receive?

Over 24 hours later (default check interval is 24hours), I was not
updated. I can't seem to duplicate OP's problem.

Yep, if auto checking for updates to Firefox is unchecked, being able
to configure what is to be done with an update it's not supposed to
receive is or should be irrelevant, as no auto checking for updates
should be done. It's not what happened though; auto checking for
updates was unchecked, but the update was downloaded and installation
to be completed upon restarting Firefox.
