Thread: Address Book List, Can't drag and drop

  1. Address Book List, Can't drag and drop

Ok guys... what am I missing?

I created a list connected to the personal address book. When I try to
click and drag a contact in the personal address book and drop it on the
list I get a circle with a slash (can't drop that here). I can drag
contacts between address books but I can't drop any contact on any list.

    TIA,

Should have waited two more minutes before posting that.

Just found Control-click, drag & drop.

But why Control-click, drag & drop?

    May be an OS thing....
Note that when you Drag & Drop (D&D) from one BOOK to ANOTHER book
WITHOUT the using the CRTL key - the entry is MOVED (display suppressed)
    from the Original book.

When you use the CTRL key, a small "+" appears and the entry is COPIED.
Original entry remains in Original book.

If you D&D and entry from a LIST in one book to another book,
conventions are the same as D&D from book to book.
D&D with CTRL key = copy
D&D WITHOUT CTRL key = MOVE (deletes from original LIST)

Lists are just pointers to entries in parent book.....
When you D&D from parent book to LIST, you can not move the entry (it is
just a pointer) so you must use the CRTL key and COPY the entry.

    does that make sense ?

it used to be drag and drop, but it changed and I have no
    idea why.

That does make sense, I guess. Must keep the integrity of convention.

Didn't with version 1.5 and prior, if you D&D it would never move, only
copy? I remember having to delete after I would D&D addresses into
    another folder.

That's strange. Never saw that. But it wasn't until this thread that I
went to check the D&D and the behavior had changed, so I'm guessing it
was up through 1.5 that my description pertained to.

    Clay,
    in:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4)
    Gecko/20070604 Thunderbird/2.0.0.4 ID:2007060411

Correct.....entry in list IS a pointer to entry in parent BOOK.....
    ergo
if you delete entry from parent BOOK, the list has NO ENTRY to point to
and it is deleted from the LIST
If you delete entry from LIST, it leaves entry in parent book.
    Please see my reply above.

D&D (Left Mouse Buttom....LMB)works when going from ONE BOOK to
another...entry is REMOVED from origin book
D&D LMB+CTRL will COPY the entry to the other BOOK - leaving the origin
    intact.
AFAICT - you MUST use the CRTL key when copying to ANY list, be it in
the same book or a LIST in another different book.....

get sort of convoluted..but does what it is supposed to do.
    But I could be wrong....

Agree with you on v2. But I still think in 1.5 (maybe earlier) if you
D&D an address from one folder to another, it wouldn't move it, only
copy. This was very annoying to me for a long time and I was surprised
to test in in v2 today and find it isn't that way any longer.

A quick examination of bugzilla will give the reasons it changed, and
I'll leave that as an exercise to the reader.

This behavior will change back to what it had been with a fix from
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=381276 - which will
eventually make it back into Thunderbird v2 per the address book developer.

Actually it won't change back to exactly what it was - you'll be able to
copy cards into mailing lists with or without ctrl. Selection between
copy and move whilst dragging between address books will still be possible.

    Standard8
