| I hope someone here will be able to help me with this problem: I have a dialup account with Earthlink and my e-mail address is tied to that account (two e-mail addresses, actually, since I use an e-mail alias for most purposes and that one includes my domain name, important since it's business related). Trying to move away from dialup, I hooked up AT&T (SBC) DSL for the first time about two weeks ago. DSL is great, e-mail is now not so great. Have been receiving e-mails from others, but haven't been able to send e-mails. Can post to the Corel Painter newsgroups and the messages appear there, but BCC's to myself don't arrive. That's how it's been until today.... When I thought the problem was fixed as the AT&T Tech Support guy had me unplug the power line from my DSL modem, wait a couple of seconds, plug it back in again, then send an e-mail to myself using two e-mail addresses. The "send e-mail" progress line finished and the e-mail vanished off my screen so it appeared it had been sent. Then I (immediately) checked my sent box and sure enough, there was a copy of the "sent" e-mail. Two and a half to three hours later, I'm still waiting for my two copies of the test e-mail to arrive. Over the past few days.... One Tech Support person at AT&T told me AT&T had blocked my Earthlink(Mindspring) SMTP server and he'd unblocked it so I should wait a couple of hours, then try to send e-mail again. I did, it didn't work. Another Tech Support person at AT&T (SBC) told me there wasn't anything he could do since I was using Thunderbird, but suggested that I download a Thunderbird SMTP Authentication Extension. I went to the Thunderbird site and couldn't make heads or tails of what was there. Nothing looked like what he described. A Tech Support guy at Earthlink told me the solution was to contact AT&T and get the settings for Outlook Express, use them in Thunderbird, then go to webmail.earthlink.net and set up e-mail forwarding (forwarding my e-mail to my sbcglobal.net e-mail address). The "Lead" at AT&T told me the above solution was a sloppy method and I didn't need to use it anyway. He's the one who had me unplug the power line from my DSL modem this morning, plug it back in again, then send myself an e-mail....which appeared to send but still hasn't arrived three hours later. Again, people at both Earthlink and AT&T (SBC) told me I'd have to use MS Outlook which I do not want to do. I like the Firefox/Thunderbird combination and need to send e-mail many times a day as I'm teaching software classes and people are e-mailing me to join our forums and enroll in classes. I can't respond to them and this, for me, is a serious problem that needs to get fixed ASAP. Thanks for taking time to read all this, and thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Sincerely, Jinny Brown ___________________ |

| Hi Old Gringo, Thanks, but I'm still stuck, since no one at Earthlink or at At&T could give me a way to set up Thunderbird to work with At&T. If you know how, can you explain it to me step by step? I'm obviously new to all this and need all the help I can get. I should say that both Earthlink and At&T told me they don't support Thunderbird but a couple of them tried anyway. We got so far as to do this: ____________________________ Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) Changed the server name to the SBC name (smtp.sbc.global.net or something like that), changed my user name to what they told me (my sbcglobal.net address). I didn't write down the SBC server name because by then they decided it wouldn't work anyway, so we backed out of the Account Settings dialog box. ____________________________ I'm wondering now if we gave up too soon. Surely there must be a way to set up for AT&T using Thunderbird??? By the way, should I be able to have both my dialup line and DSL line hooked to my computer at the same time? It seems I shouldn't because trying to connect to the Net with dialup didn't work when I tried hooking both up but did work again once I unhooked DSL. Thanks, Jinny _________________ Old Gringo wrote: > 2 separate accounts 1 email client. Outlook Express or Thunderbird. > You will need to set up each account according the directions for each > ISP. I'll be happy to learn, but I don't understand what that link has to do with my problem. I've been using e-mail for over a decade and whether or not I like doing it, I've set up my accounts several times both for e-mail and for newsgroups. How is this different, other than the pop and smtp server entries and how does that relate to my using DSL and not being able to send mail using DSL? I'm not using Netscape 7, though I did for a long time. I'm not on an Earthlink server. I'm on Mindspring servers for incoming and outgoing e-mail (pop.mindspring.com and smtp.mindspring.com), the reason being that I've been a customer since before Earthlink and Mindspring merged. Sorry to be a bother but I need help and I'm trying everything I can think of and anyone else can think of to make this work. I figure someone must know the answer. Thanks again. Jinny |

Make sure you're using the correct SMTP server for the ISP you're connected to; if you're connected to ATT, you may need to use their SMTP to send mail, and not Earthlink's. Many ISP's reserve the SMTP port, and others won't let you use theirs if you are not connected on their network. Either case would cause the problem you are describing. -- }:-) Christopher Jahn {:-( http://home.comcast.net/~xjahn/Main.html Weather's here, wish you were beautiful. |

That is because your incoming email comes *directly* from earthlink; your outgoing earthlink mail on your AT&T DSL line must be *relayed* thru AT&T. I suspect AT&T - like many ISPs - refuses the relay. Hence your fix is to set your outgoing SMTP to go to AT&T. But first, you will need to set up a mail account on your AT&T ISP and in TB. Then you can gradually wean your correspondents into using that new account. -- Irwin Managing TB Profiles: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/profile Managing FF Profiles: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile |

Did you follow the instructions at the earthlink URL mentioned above exactly? The SBC account settings are a little screwy -- our not-particularly-computer-literate friend who signed up for SBC/AT&T/Yahoo DSL had a bitch of a time sending and getting his mail. Isn't there a set of instructions at their website? Some ISPs are really picky about allowing the use of somebody else's SMTP server. -- Cheers, Bev (Happy Linux User #85683, Slackware 10.2) /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ When cryptography is outlawed, only outlaws will qwertzuio asdfghjk pyxcvbnml -- M. I've done all that over and over again, even deleted all my accounts and started from the beginning, more than once. For some miraculous and mysterious reason, by the end of an exhausting day yesterday, everything was working perfectly except that I couldn't post to newsgroups. Or so I thought. A message I posted to the Corel Painter IX newsgroup last night, didn't appear even after a couple of hours, yet it was there this afternoon! If you see this post, I guess everything is working as expected. And.. I didn't have to give up using Thunderbird or use the AT&T SMTP server. I'm using Earthlink for both incoming and outgoing mail. Just what I wanted.. for now... until some other things are finished and it'll be safe to switch my e-mail completely to AT&T or to my other web hosting company. Thanks to those who pitched in to help me. I was just about to give up and go home, so to speak. Now I can get back to enrolling students in my software classes. (If they haven't given up on me.)
