You mean it was previously there, they removed it, then they re-added it?

phew! To deserve a big thank?

It certainly is there but how do you use it? Seems to me that if you
reply to a mail the quoted message is already there and clicking on
    "quote" just duplicates it.

I must be missing something, I'm sure:-(

I am a longtime user of the Agent newsreader. What I wish is quoting
functionality similar to Agent's - highlight the part of the message you
are replying to, and that highlighted portion is the only thing quoted
in your reply. I really dislike having to snip large portions of a
message to respond to just one portion.

    Depends on your reply format.
In groups where 'full quoting' is recommended, then simply allowing the
program to quote when replying will do the job. In cases where
editing/snipping is allowed/recomended then using the quote button
selectively may be more efficient. A matter of choice and personal preference

Then this quote button seems tailor made for you

I'm missing whatever it is too. If I turn off auto-quoting, hit reply
and click the Quote button, it still quote the whole message. I'm
obviously in blond mode - I can't see any point in it,

I agree that would be a great feature. I believe including it was
discussed before but there were programming complications getting it to
    work.

Interesting - it's been working in Gravity newsreader and Pegasus Mail
for at least 10 years. T'bird is sure taking a long time to catch up
with some of these "newer" features...!

    Turn off auto-quote
    hit reply
Select the text you wish to reply to, hit the Quote button, only the text you
selected will appear in the reply.
It may not make a lot of sense in this newsgroup, but in some, where
'replies' can run into several paragraphs if not more, being able to
selectively quote can be a godsend at time. As I said, its a matter of
personal choice and preference. You dont want the button (as you dont use
it?) then you can hide it, there ya go, problem solved.

One of the things I missed most in later versions of Netscape was the
dropping of the quote button. That was feature that set the Mozilla
lines apart. I used to set my e-mail NOT to quote everything
automatically, then used the quote button selectively when I did want to
    quote a message.

Could I have been that blind not to see it before now in TB?? Well, I

Yep, for you, and your 'style' the Quote button is a godsend.

Yes, and when TB has been around for 10 years, I am sure it will have
    those features as well.

Just where does one FIND this quote button? I don't seem to find it.

Ok, I give up. How do you turn off auto-quote? I've searched through
all the options, tried to find info on the thunderbird website - I'm too
tired to keep looking. Pretty please?

Those directions don't make sense to me. If I turn off auto-quote and
hit reply, there is no text to select in the compose window. Only my
signature appears in the body of the message.

If I hit the Quote button, I get the entire quote back, just as if I
    hadn't disabled auto-quote. I don't see where to select text for a
    snipped quote.

(I am using the NestedQuote Remover extension. It seems to be working in
the compose window. I wonder if it is interfering?)

When you're in the composition window, right click on an open spot in
the menu area and click on "customize", then drag the button to the
toolbar. Not very intuitive (finding it that is) but once you get used
to how FF and TB works with customizing toolbars and such you'll be a
    whiz at it !! :-)
