Not sure if this suits your purpose, but pressing F8 will hide
the message pane (or show it if it was already hidden). That
will allow you to select messages and do what you will with them
- including deleting - without opening them.

View|Layout|Message Pane will do the same thing.

Sorry, but the preview pane always opens the message, and does this with
OE as well, which is one of the problems with security OE has, in that
it can execute an attachment when it opens a message. TB will NOT run
an attachment just from opening the message.
To delete a message without opening the email, just select it, and press
'delete'.

provides a solution for you
