Thunderbird 1.5 toolbars issue
On a dark and stormy night, a nearby lightning strike knocked out my
power. My PC returned to life without issue, other than a couple
oddities. The one that's driving me a little buggy:
Thunderbird 1.5 on WinXP will no longer remember when I customize a
toolbar. I add buttons for Next, Previous, File, etc., and all's fine
until I shut down Thunderbird. I restart Thunderbird, and the default
toolbars are back.
I've removed extensions and reinstalled Thunderbird. Still no luck. Any
thoughts?

I saw something very similar when an upgrade went buggy. Already
knowing that toolbar customizations are recorded in
localstore.rdf I quickly solved it in my case by doing the following:
Shut down TBird.
Go to your TBird profile and back-up your localstore.rdf, such as
by renaming it to something like localstore.rdf.bak.
Restart TBird. You will get the default toolbars and layouts.
Recustomize.
If your customization now stick your changes will be recorded in
a new localstore.rdf and you can delete the old one. If this
doesn't solve the problem you can back out of this procedure by
simply restoring the backed-up localstore.rdf.

That worked. Thank you so much. It was driving me nuts.

It might be interesting to see if the original localstore.rdf got set to
read-only (either in properties, or in the permissions) for some reason.
If so, you could reset that, and not have to re-customize.
just an idea,
