I did not, strictly speaking, do either. I added the comment that many
people delete attachments automatically, which is a valid point, not so far
mentioned relating to the bug. That does not come under either of the above
headings, although I think the second is very true.

May I quote a section of that page, and suggest you read it yourself, as you
    plainly obviously haven't so done.

"If you see someone not following these rules, the first step is to point
this out by private mail. They may well not be aware of this document."

How long has "private" equated to "newsgroup"?

Thanks - been there now. Rather daunting
interface, not a lot of it made much sense to me
but I found the the specific problem (the send
failure message when running a "forward" filter) I
was having had already been reported so I voted
for it, and added my address to the Cc. Didn't
dare do anything else in case I was executed or
    something.

That reference is specifically about someone not following the rules in
a Bugzilla comment, it has nothing to do with newsgroups.

Chris's post was to point out to new users that Bugzilla is a new a
different world, and one must be careful how he or she uses it. I am not
sure why you seem to have taken it so personally, as, at least to my
reading, it was certainly not intended as a personal statement.

I like to think of myself as an intelligent person, but anything having to do
with Bugzilla is so user-hostile that I just don't bother unless I'm totally
up against the wall. If you use it regularly I'm sure it makes sense in a
weird sort of way, but for the once-per-quarter user, it's completely different.

They track your IP address and send you a copy of something that's definitely
not safe for work. That's if you're lucky.

I guess he just didn't notice the word "addendum." :-)

The significance was far from clear - it looked like a flame to me.

I heard from Bugzilla "Bug 301808 depends on bug
    314471, which changed state."
    They sent me to
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314471

I've been and am none the wiser - a page of
gobblegedook which means nothing to me. It says
the bug is resolved but what does that actually
mean in terms of the end user? Does it mean the
next release will be okay - or that there is
something I am supposed to do or what?
Sorry - just an ordinary user here.

It means that the bug that was closed (X) was a duplicate of some other
bug (Y) that still hasn't been fixed. Since the bug you are interested
in depended on X, it now depends on Y. There is nothing you are supposed
    to do except wait.
