I have tried DBD-MySQL 4.005, 3.0002 and 2.9004 but all three failed. The first two showed the above error, the third (2.9004) complained about compatability, i'm assuming due to being an old version.

ActivePerl 5.8.8.822
mysql 5.0.45
bugzilla 3.0.2

Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, i just fixed it.

I had two versions of DBI installed. One from ppm install DBI and the other
that came with Activestate Perl.

I couldn't remove the perl DBI so i decided to remove the other one, and
after doing so I ran checksetup.pl and now it's working fine.

I hope this helps everyone else.

That almost worked for me, I then received the following error messsage:
Removing existing compiled templates ...
Precompiling templates...
Migrating old chart data into database...
Can't use an undefined value as a HASH reference at Bugzilla/Install/DB.pm line
1990.

It helped me. I had the same issue, with
DBI 1.43 and
DBI 1.58 both installed.

Removing the older version got me past the bug.
(same versions of perl, mysql, and bugzilla as you...)

Thank you, thank you, I ran into the same problem and had the same
issues and your fix worked !!

Must have gone down teh same clumsy path of installing this thing.
