mail arrival notification...but no mail
[SM 1.1.4, fresh install, win2ksp4 + rollup]
All of my email accounts are pop3 and set up to check for mail each 10
minutes. Without fail, one of the pop3 accounts alerts that email has
arrived.
This account's letter icon in the left-hand pane changes to show a green
arrow, an audible sounds, a letter icon appears in the lower right-hand
desktop screen. Clicking on the inbox or any of the other boxes
eliminates the alerts. Scrolling through the inbox and other boxes of
the account shows no emails have been added.
How can I trace what's happening here?

check your settings: Edit, Mail & Newsgroups Account
Settings, select the account, and under Server Settings,
make sure that "automatically download new messages" is
checked. Did that work?

I see that occasionally when my message filters act on a message and
move it elsewhere. Could that be your cause?

Peter identified the issue: I'd left the option "automatically download
new messages" unchecked for that particular account. After I changed
that, everything worked as expected.
