First guess, upgrade your perl to 5.8.8 (5.8.1 is several YEARS old)

Can you translate that to an OS version/name I recognize ?
(uname -a) ?

> usethreads=define use5005threads=undef useithreads=define
> usemultiplicity=define

Are you actually using threads ? IF not, disable them its faster anwyay.
