This is a discussion on running on vmware, ok how do i do something? - Minix ; i downloaded vmware and minix 3.1.2 and can run it, logging in with root and blank as pw. but how can i do something? is it just a console? no windows-like environment?...

    If a windows-like environment is what you were looking for, then Minix
    is probably not your best bet (for now, at least). Try something like
    Ubuntu Linux instead.

    Two graphical shells are available (X11 with twm and EDE, the latter
    of which is the more Windows-like). You can install them using the
    packman command. However, most of the time you will be using the
    console even if you use them.

    If you need an OS that is simple to understand, easy to modify, quick
    to compile and small is what you need, and you are willing to
    sometimes look at the gory details to get problems solved (memory
    allocation and hardware suppport mostly) then Minix is right for you.
    If you don't need these features or are not willing to look under the
    hood, then there are better alternatives.
