The OP did some work to gather those numbers.

Linux and Mac are basically not in competition with each other for the
    next 5 to 10 years.

Increased market share for Mac is a benefit to Linux.

I agree on both accounts. Linux and Mac may never be in competition,
in fact, if Mac stays at the high end where the profits are big.
It's people who use monopoly power to overcharge for commodity
products of mediocre quality that are in trouble.

BTW, Mac may have only 3% of the world wide sales, but their profit is
50% of Microsoft's (something like that, I don't recall the exact
    figures).

Apple sometimes has an uncomfortable relationship with FOSS. There
are strains and will be more in the future, but I certainly don't
anticipate them doing anything like threatening to sue Linux users
over phony patent issues, as Microsoft has done.

As for increased market share being good for both players, I've
noticed in stories about businesses switching to Macs that once the
Windows-only mentality is broken, Linux is considered along with
Macs. I posted an link on this a week ago,
    http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...3036428429.htm

recognize when someone is on the same side as he is. (Clue: Edwin is
trying to show that Apple *isn't* doing well).

    More Fuzzy math?

    AAPL net income 4.35 billion
    MSFT net income 16.42 billion.

    4.35 is not 50% of 16.42

    The truth hurts.

    It's not.
    Nessuno pulled a Schestowitz.

It *is* a good article though.

Edwin, why does it bother you so much that the Mac market share is
increasing? It's not like Windows is going to be eclipsed any time soon,
so why are you so worried?

To quote Edwin (or was it Glorb? Or perhaps Mr. X? Or, maybe it was
Hasta la Vista?) "Your fear is palpable."

Figures aside I can say for a fact that I see more Macs now, in the wild,
    than I have ever seen.

I travel a lot and the Macs are seen in airports, planes, hotel lounges
    etc.

One thing I almost never see is Linux.

In fact I don't think I have ever seen a business traveler using Linux
except for me when I dual boot once in a while.

spews the group with anti-Microsoft baloney or conspiracy theories about
