  1. Can I fix this Win98 error?

I bought this used Win98 machine a couple of years ago.
    I have hardly used it.
I don't really have experience with Win98. I have mostly used
    Win95 and XP Pro.
Yesterday I connected it to the Net with Ethernet and ADSL.
It was the first time I used it on the Net, but the first owner
    probably have used it there.
I thought I should try Windows Update to get the latest fixes.
I dowloaded about 20 updates, thought I should take it all in one
    stride...
    Should never have done it...!!!

When I restarted it, Windows starts up, but just as the Start menu and
task bar shows up, I get a terminal error, see below (it's in
    norwegian, but probably easily understood).
It turns out I'm still able to run most programs (with the error box
not touched!), but many of the most importent ones, like IE, the
Windows explorer(filesystem), Microsoft Access etc. don't run.
The desktop never shows up. The machine is thus severely crippled,
    no Internet for instance!
The error repeats each time I start Windows.

It's not an option to format the disk, and reinstall, since several
important programs is only on the disk, I don't have copies of them,
the last owner never gave me the original CDs.

Is there a (easy) way to fix this problem??

    Regards,

  2. Re: Can I fix this Win98 error?

    Just a follow-up:
    I have Win98 SE, Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
The Control Panel does not work either, of course a major drawback.

By the way, my IP doesn't seem to get this ng in full.
Is this available on the net somewhere in full,
of course: news:comp.os.ms-windows will not work for me then.
