  1. microsoft update changes

I'm posting this primarily so that other people who run into the
same issue can find this quickly with google.

In the past I used to update XP Pro systems with

    IE: www.microsoft.com
    click: support and updates
    click: Microsoft updates
    select custom (or express)
    ...

As of recently (first seen 8/20/07) that no longer works. Instead
after the 3rd step it brings up "Microsoft Update Catalog". There
may be a way to coerce MUC to load just the latest set of
patches, but I've not yet found it. Instead, use this alternative
route to get back to the true Microsoft updates page:

    IE: www.microsoft.com
    click: support and updates
    click: security home
click: update your computer - Microsoft updates
    select custom (or express)
    ...

It may be necessary to scroll down a bit in the Security Home window
to see the Microsoft Updates link, which is one of three items under the
"Update your computer" heading in a smallish box.

It has been pointed out to me that these are both easier:

    IE:
    tools -> Windows update

    or

    IE: windowsupdate.microsoft.com

(For reasons I won't go into, automatic update is not an option on these
    machines.)
