  1. initrd-2.6.24.7-desktop-2mnb.img generation

    Just did an urpmi update.

New kernel did not create initrd-2.6.24.7-desktop-2mnb.img on my
neighbors machine. Worked on mine. Same hardware, release except I
have 3 gig mem and she has 1 gig.

Terminal did not show any errors during upgrade.

What commands should I run to create initrd-2.6.24.7-desktop-2mnb.img?

I seem to have everything on the system.

mkinitrd alone on a shell prompt will tell you what it expects. Could some
    build-essential be missing?

Hope not, I have the development tools installed and these packages

    kernel-desktop-devel-latest
    kernel-desktop-latest
    fglrx-kernel-desktop-latest

Will not know until I can get some message on the console.

Will have to get to her system to see if mkinitrd tells me anything.

Well mkinitrd ran with no problems and system boots new kernel.

No idea why it would not complete before. I had tried un-installing
and installing the new kernel and mkinitrd did not work under gui either.

    Thank you for the command.

You know a lot more than I do, but I would simply copy initrd from your
machine to hers. Everything else is identical.

That is a workaround solution, but I was hoping to find out what
causes the problem. After two years of "no update problems" I had hoped to
turn updates over to her and mdkapplet.

And it is probably not repeatable. With no identifiable difference between
the two systems, you will probably never know the cause. Here, it could
easily be a temporary dip in the mains power.

This kind of thing seems to involve gremlins*. With earlier versions of
Ubuntu, the Kubuntu installer failed every time for me. Somewhere along
the way, I bought a new computer, but that made no difference. In the
end, I installed straight Ubuntu and downloaded KDE as an extra.

With Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid, for me, even the standard edition exits
the installer just before the bootloader comes up. Mintlinux openly
admits it is an Ubuntu clone, and the same thing happens. Somebody having
the same problem with Hardy said that his computer components were "very
ordinary." Yet the problem is so rare, relatively, that those reporting
it are pointed to a HOWTO for people who have a complete but misconfigured
GRUB installation. In one discussion, somebody involved with fixing bugs
came on and said that they had no idea what the cause was. Officially,
the bug had been fixed and closed a while back.

I am sure that somewhere in the past I am descended from Murphy. Even at
the Pokies, my wife does all right, but I usually get nowhere. Are you
certain that your neighbor doesn't share a gene with me?

*Gremlins - a Royal Air Force term, supposedly made up from Grimm's Fairy
Tales - the only book in the mess (true!) - and the only brand of beer in
the mess at the time, but I have forgotten my source and the story isn't at
    Wikipedia.
