    That's not a very good description of a problem.

    Setup your question better.

    Edward, is your laptop 64-bit? I run Googleearth quite O.K. on a tower
    setup with AMD64, NVIDIA card and mobo, MDV 2008.1 32-bit.

    It has been said that laptops are very different from desktops - their
    requirements are different - but in your case, the laptop is winning.

    Try running googleearth as a command in a terminal, and post here any error
    messages you see.

    Mike's suggestion is good. Have a look at
    http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html , which is used as a
    kind of standard. Then list your setup as he suggests.

    On clicking: Menu, Internet, Google earth, all I get is the first dialogue
    of google earth, with the globe of the earth and google earth written on
    it.
    In the bottom "panel" I get "Xinitilizing"
    After about 15 seconds, both disapear!
    hope this assists.

    Will try this. I had a feeling it had to do with the graphics. The "Nvidia"
    logo just before opening up is showing a red "beta" sign. This is supposed
    to be the "propriety diver" available in the package.
    Thanks for the suggestion

    I have the same problem - works on laptop, not on desktop. Can't seem to
    find a file that's there:
    [graeme@mozart google-earth]$ uname -a
    Linux mozart.gemmills.invalid 2.6.22.19-desktop-2mdv #1 SMP Mon May 5
    20:55:05 EDT 2008 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ GNU/Linux

    [graeme@mozart google-earth]$ ./googleearth-bin
    ../googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries:
    libgoogleearth_lib.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
    directory
    [graeme@mozart google-earth]$ ls -l|grep libgoogleearth*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 graeme graeme 987572 2008-10-30 11:40 libgoogleearth_lib.so*

    The "googleearth" start-up script doesn't seem to find GOOGLEEARTH_DATA_PATH

    if [ "${GOOGLEEARTH_DATA_PATH}" = "" ]; then
    GOOGLEEARTH_DATA_PATH="`FindPath $0`"
    fi

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:${GOOGLEEARTH_DATA_PATH}:${LD_LI BRARY_PATH}
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

    because LD_LIBRARY_PATH contains nothing relevant:
    [graeme@mozart google-earth]$ set|grep LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/pgsql/lib

    Just off to see whether it's set on the laptop.....
