For the ati problem, see https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=38941
You'll need to install
http://users.mandriva.com.br/~ander/...8.1.x86_64.rpm

I installed the new driver.
That helped somewhat, the text is now clear when i exit from X but the
system still hangs.
The last thing on the screen after X exits and the system hangs is this:
Entering Restore TV
stuff here, cant remember what, its not logged
Leaving Restore TV
system hangs here!

I thought that might happen, as the people reporting the problem with dim
text (including me), did not have the problem of the system hanging.
Which kernel are you running, and what kernel parameters are you using
for splash and video, in lilo/grub?
I'm using splash=verbose video=vesafb:1280x1024-32@60 with the kernel
2.6.24.7-1mnb.

/boot/grub/menu.lst: (I boot this kernel)
title desktop 2.6.24.7-1mnb
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz-2.6.24.7-desktop-1mnb
BOOT_IMAGE=desktop_2.6.24.7-1mnb root=LABEL=disk_root splash=verbose
vga=788
initrd (hd0,0)/initrd-2.6.24.7-desktop-1mnb.img
My monitor is native 1680x1050, in kde "Screeen Resize&Rotate" icon shows 4
entries for 60hz, and 1 for 50Hz, 3 of the 60Hz items are checked (looks
broken to me) but other than that I dont know the default refresh freq of
my monitor but its range is 50-85Hz
Thanks

I'd experiment with different text modes, to see if that fixes the problem.
As the text mode is for the console only, and doesn't affect Xorg, I'd try
vga=NORMAL_VGA or vga=EXTENDED_VGA.

Dave - i havn't tried it yet, but next time i get ready to reboot I'll try
out your suggestion, might awhile... I get real tied up with things and
rebooting is a killer (one of the reasons i love linux - almost never have
to reboot)
Thanks

Well, i tried this, but if i use what you actually have here its not valid.
The kernel stops at boot and says that NORMAL_VGA isnt a number and wants
me to input one.
So, after booting I looked up this vga= param and its got a badly written
document that will lead a person right down the long and dusty road, but i
figured it out. The table of numbers they show **must be converted to
decimal** then you can put that in the vga= param.
I've got to get this working correctly, the hang at 'exit from X' is going
to corrupt my disk sooner or later. Its unacceptable.

Works if i totally remove the vga= addition.
Based on that it will probably work with the right vga= number but its real
risky to experiment with it too many times, sooner or later the disk is
going to be hosed. Why should this be a problem? i dont know, something in
the install gets botched and i end up with a broken system. I probably
ought to just say "install default kde" and not do any individual package
selection at all.
Thanks

I've never heard of those boot parameters, but...
vga=normal
.... should work.
Your mileage may vary... ;-)
