Thread: Update logs

  1. Update logs

I have a problem where an application had a load time of about 50
seconds, but after an update to some other files it went down to 3
seconds. There has since been other updates (not to the main
application), and now the application takes 50 seconds to load again.

Are there any log files that can be searched in chronological order of
install to find out what was installed that could be causing this
    incredible long load time?

    Thanks

It may help if you specify which application, and which version of Mandriva.

    grep RPM /var/log/syslog|grep installed

If you want to look back past last sunday (assuming you have logrotate running
    each week, in cron.weekly),

    zgrep RPM /var/log/syslog.1.gz|grep installed

    2008.1 and Filezilla (ftp).

Running filezilla under strace shows it's running kde-config multiple times,
and appears to be duplicating much of the work done by kbuildsyscoa and
    update-menus.

See if running (as root) "kbuildsycoca --global", and "update-menus", to
update the files in /usr/share/, and then logout/login to kde, speeds up
the loading of filezilla, on your system.

Firstly let me say that I fixed the load time problem. I searched for an
up-to-date rpm of Filezilla (none visible in rpmdrake though - and am not
installing cooker). On installing it took the load time back to around 5
    seconds.

I don't know if it's of any use to diagnose what was/is wrong, as every
time something gets updated, the load time for Filezilla goes real
long... On running the command you suggested, Kicker restarted and only
the permanent running application icons (next to the clock) did not
vanish (pidgin, skype, network monitor), everything else like KOrganizer,
    Klipper vanished.

No idea about what is the latest, have you looked in backports.

As it's loading in under 5 seconds here, I didn't think to check for an
    updated version.

I'm very surprised. I've used the commands often, and never had it interfere
with a running application. Very strange. Were there any problems after
    restarting kde?

    > kbuildsycoca --global
    > kbuildsycoca: WARNING: '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' specifies
    > undefined mimetype/servicetype 'application/sdp'

I have a script that will get rid of most of these error messages. It does
so by running kbuildsycoca --global, and getting the list of undefinded mime
types, from the output. For the ones where the proper
/usr/share/mimelnk/*/*.desktop file doesn't exist, it generates a minimal file.
Running the script gets rid of most of the messages. It doesn't get rid of
the errors, where the proper file does exist, but has errors in it's contents.
Those are left for manual editing.

I run it anytime I install a new kde application, that doesn't bother defining
    the mimetype.

If you're interested, it's available at
    http://www.ody.ca/~dwhodgins/MissingMimesAdd

It must be run as root. I'd run it without kde running, just to be on the
    safe side.

I mostly created the script, to cut down on the clutter, whenever I run a
kde application, such as kate, after running "su -l root", in a kde konsole.

Curious, why the $ on the IFS= lines?
I have not seen that anywhere.

The apostrophe in IFS does dink up gedit, nedit, emacs's language
    highlighting.

Glad kwrite has no problem with it.

    That's what I learned from abs-guide-5.0/HTML/arrays.html from
    http://personal.riverusers.com/~theg...de-5.4.tar.bz2.

Looking through info bash, in "Appendix B Major Differences From The Bourne Shell",
    it has ...

    * The `$'...'' quoting syntax, which expands ANSI-C
backslash-escaped characters in the text between the single quotes,
    is supported (*note ANSI-C Quoting:.

The ANSI-C quoting just has a list of \characters, and what they get translated to.
While some of the samples in the abs guide don't use the $'...' syntax, most do.

I like kate, for good syntax highlighting of bash scripts.

Well, look at that, never look at IFS in
    http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/index.html
I just used \letter syntax, without the leading $, which has worked so far.

    Thank you for your time.
