If I 'upgrade' (keep /home intact but replace everything else) to 2008.1
using a Live DVD, is there a way of keeping the commercial bits (graphics
driver, Acrobat, Opera) that came with 2008.0?

    There is no live DVD.

If you mean the live CD, then you cannot use it to upgrade. It can only be
used for a complete clean install.

If you mean the Free DVD, then you will have to download the proprietary
graphics drivers after installation. Opera is available from PLF, but I
believe that you'll need to get acroread from Adobe.
