Guessing you need to check a libjavaplugin_oji.so link in
    /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

    ls -al /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji*

If blinking, link is no longer valid. You will need to delete it and
    link it to correct libjavaplugin_oji.so

    You can do a
    su - root
    /etc/cron.daily/mlocate.cron
    locate libjavaplugin_oji.so
    and set your link.

Process I use for jre (java) updates found here.

The 5 Java downloads offered by MDKApplet all had bad signatures so I
opted not to install them, maybe your system updated with the bad files?

I saw no reports of bad signatures.

Incidentally, the same general update screwed up the font I
was using to show Pan body frames, such that text appeared as
    strings of boxes!

Had to change to a different font...

    It was blinking.

That showed two in the java area:

    /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.04/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/
    libjavaplugin_oji.so

    /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.04/jre/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/
    libjavaplugin_oji.so

I would guess it is the 2nd I need to link to. How to know?

Well now, that's actually good to see. The JAVA 1.6.x updates just
showed up today, but when I went to install them they had bad
signatures, too. I was thinking it might be a problem with my ISP or
    something.

This is the only one of all visible that - when the symlink
points to it - shows Java installed in aboutlugins.

But when it runs in Firefox it causes Firefox to hang, so it
would seem the update has truly screwed java here.

Will try restoring from backup - unless anyone any other
    suggestions!

(I noticed others saw 'bad signatures' for the java update,
but I watched the whole process carefully and saw no such info.)

What fixed it for me was to correct the symlink in /etc/alternatives. This
    may help:

OK - have restored the whole root partition (as of 9 days ago).

So - system-wise - I'm back to before the flawed java update,
and before the Firefox update from 2.0.0.11 to 2.0.0.12.

BUT, if I go into MCC Software Update, it shows only the update
files as of YESTERDAY (i.e. java update, etc). It does not show
the update e.g. of Firefox to 2.0.0.12, done 2 days ago.
How can that be, if MCC stores my software situation in /root?
(or does it?) and /root has been restored as of 9 days ago -
    before 2.0.0.12 was offered?

You should have been able to uninstall java and install original java.

Is /var under your / or in a separate partition?

For your software update problem, click up a terminal
    su - root
    urpmi.update --wget -a
    mcc

    and see where you stand.

So apart from that the java update was OK?

Thanks for ref to bug report. I see there is also a reference
to the font problem I had.

I'll wait for the mentioned 1.6.0.04-1.0.2mdv 'fixed' version
    and use that...

Yeouch, jre 1.6.0.4 has bee out for months.
Running apps with known security fixes unpatched is dangerous.
Black hats usually are out hunting unpatched apps within 36 hours.

Wait a week or more for third party vendor updates to show up is kinda
    asking for it.

Last stat I saw was about 30,000 web pages a day are cracked and
serving up malware. Javascript/java is getting to be the choice of
cracks outside of the Active X exploits.

Point taken, though. As others have been successful with it

Yes, but do understand, I was indicating the jre from
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Check the date I downloaded it in this ls snippet:

The following work fine for me on my 64-bit system,
    both n 2008.0 and 2008.1.

    java-1.7.0-icedtea-1.7.0.0-24.614.1mdv2008.1
    java-1.7.0-icedtea-plugin-1.7.0.0-24.614.1mdv2008.1

Just tried updating to 1.6.0.04 with MCC and again I just get bad
signatures. I decided to forget Sun-Java and replaced it with Icedtea.
Seems to be doing fine. In fact, I think I like it better than Sun's
version. The main thing I do with Java applets is look at radar loops.
(I'm a farmer. Weather is important to me.) jre 1.6 doesn't show me
anything until the whole loop is downloaded, but Icedtea shows each
image as I get it, the way jre USED to work.

Yes, I did understand that, but I prefer - wherever possible -
to do updating through the formal MCC channel (so I don't have to
keep hunting for notes describing how to do manual updates!).

As luck would have it, today - after replacing Firefox 2.0.0.11
by 2.0.0.12 - I looked in MCC Software Update and saw that the
corrected version of the java update (1.6.0.04-1.0.2mdv) was
there, so did that update, and - java is working fine, without
having to do any symlink twiddling...

    > and in aboutlugins Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_04-b12

That's exactly what I see now.

Many thanks for all your help, once again! Much appreciated...
