    The above still baffles me.

Does MCC store an installation's state somewhere on the 'net?

I expected to see it list the java update, but how can it
'remember' the Firefox update of 4 days ago if its history
records have been set back 9 days?

I again watched closely when I just now did the update
(using the corrected package: -1.0.2mdv))and - as before -saw no
    sign of any signature problem.

The update sailed through, without having to do any symlink
    twiddling, and worked first time.

Yes, I used those in the 2008.0 64-bit installation on my
laptop, in the absence of a 64-bit version of the plugin.

Perhaps we're using different repositories, and mine has a (probably)
temporary problem with this particular package. Perhaps it's something
else entirely. I have this bad habit of jumping to conclusions about
this stuff when I have insufficient knowledge. It's gotten me into
trouble before, so I will not speculate further. At least we're both up
and going, and that's probably the important part.
