inkscape error
I have the following problem since Mandriva 2007 it happened also in
Mandriva 2007.1 spring and now with 2008 still happening.
One of my favorite application is the inkscape and I cannot use it.
When I draw the first image the program finalize abruptly. I mean, the
inkscape window opens normally, I can choose help->about and other
functions, but when I select something to draw, like a rectangle, and
I use the tool, the system
The error message is as follows:
---------8<------------------8<------------------8<------------------8<---------
[gramo@mothma ~]$ inkscape &
[1] 8369
[gramo@mothma ~]$
(inkscape:8369): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_utf8_casefold: assertion `str !=
NULL' failed
Emergency save activated!
Emergency save document locations:
Documento nuevo 1.2008_02_20_11_33_44.0
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org
with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we
can fix it.
[1] Segmentation fault inkscape
---------8<------------------8<------------------8<------------------8<---------
When I install Mandriva I choose spanish and following David Mathog's
instructions I ran draklocal, select advanced and uncheck the box with
"Old compatibility (non-UTF8) encoding"... then I reboot... but the
error remains repeating every time I draw.
After that I tried with the "Old compatibility (non-UTF8) encoding"
checked... and still the same.
Does anybody have ideas to solve this problem?

inkscape is working fine here too, on 2008.0.
Try running ldd /usr/bin/inkscape (as root), and see if any of the
modules show as missing.

Re: inkscape error
Thanks David, but still not working...
As you suggest I log-in as root and try to run inkscape, the window
opens and some buttons works, but when I draw something, like a
square, the program crashes
The terminal's output is as follows:
[rnaranjo@antilles Desktop]$ su

[root@antilles Desktop]# inkscape

I ran draklocale and old utf-8 compatibility is off, then I set the
LANG and LANGUAGE variables checking if combining your suggestion with
David Mathog's one... and the result is the same crash!
Terminal's output is as follows:
[root@antilles Desktop]# export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
[root@antilles Desktop]# export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en
[root@antilles Desktop]# env | grep -i lang

Based on http://groups.google.ca/group/linux....32fa2045701ff?
try "export LANG=C", and then running inkscape. If that fails, try running
"strace -f -F -v -odebug.txt inkscape", to produce a system call trace, and
provide that as an attachment for a bug report.

Re: inkscape error
Hi
With LANG=C the problem persists, so I generate the debug.txt file as
you suggest.
How is the bug reporting procedure?
Thanks for your help

Couple of choices. You can register with bugzilla, and report the problem
to Mandriva, or register with launchpad, to report the problem directly
to the Inkscape developers.
For Mandriva, http://qa.mandriva.com/index.cgi
They already have a report for this problem,
https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=28063
but according to that bug report, the problem was fixed by upgrading to 2008.
If you choose to file the report with Mandriva, register, and then add
info to that report, stating that you are still getting the error with 2008.0,
and create an attachment, to send the strace output.
For Inkscape, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/
They don't have any bug reports showing from a search on g_utf8_casefold,
so you would have to start a new bug report with them. I haven't used
the lanchpad bug reporting software, but expect it would have a similar
facility for creating an attachment, for the strace output.

Re: inkscape error
Hello everybody
I want to tank all of you for your help sharing with you the solution
of my problem...
Effectively I subscribe myself into https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=28063
in order to receive all the suggestions around the bug, and today
Florent Thomas wrote something that resolve my problem: Remove all
ttf fonts imported from windows vía drakfont... seems that Mandriva
have some problems with this issue.
If you want to look at Florent's message is as follow:
----------8<--------------------8<--------------------8<--------------------8<----------
Hello everybody,
For additionnal comment I would like to inform you that I solve my
issue on my
OS.
I currently work with a dual boot and a Mandriva 2008.0 on a dell
inspiron
6400.
I check all posts related to my issue on the mandriva forum.
At last I tried an action which was a success.
I deleted all fonts imported from windows through drakfont (Mandriva
font
importation tool), and restarted inkscape. Everything was fine.
Afterwards I
imported windows fonts through the KDE wizard and everything stills
working.
So my conclusion is :
- Mandriva and its drakfont has got problems with importation of
windows fonts.
Since that opération, everything is ok on my pc.
Hope it could help you
PS, the Directory I deleted was :
/etc/X11/fontpath.d/drakfont_ttf
ri=50
----------8<--------------------8<--------------------8<--------------------8<----------
I try just removing the /etc/X11/fontpath.d/drakfont_ttf
ri=50 file
(it is a link to /usr/share/fonts/drakfont/ttf) but this does not
work... but when I ran drakfont and uninstall all /usr/share/fonts/
drakfont entries everything works OK with inkscape...
Thank you all again

Thanks for the update. Very strange though. I wonder what font it was, that
caused the problem. I imported the fonts I had from both 98, and xp, without
it causing a problem.

Re: inkscape error
I'm carefully uploading the fonts, one at a time before run inkscape
in order to track wich one have the problem...
As Dave says raw XP fonts are not the problem's cause.
I've downloaded several free fonts, sure one of them is the one who
makes inkscape crash.
I'll write when find the guilty one!
