  1. Watchout for newer kernels run on Mandriva 2007.1

Be careful if you try to run a newer kernel on Mandriva 2007.1.
When my machine booted with 2.6.24 the console came up and looked
normal. However after root logged in this message appeared:

    is_in_UTF8_mode: Input/output error

and the console terminal was screwed up. Typed letters were not visible
(no echo) and pressing "enter" only moved the line feed part, not also
the carriage return. Typing in "reset" (blindly) fixed the terminal.

rlogin from another machine did not do this, it seems to be only a
    console issue.

    David Mathog

I just installed the latestet 2008.0 kernel, 2.6.22.18-1mdv.
I also compiled a custom version of it, before rebooting.
The custom version works fine. The desktop version doesn't
have the modules needed to access /lib, which is on an lvm
logical volume. Looks like the Mandriva script for installing
the kernel is only loading the modules needed for /, not the
ones needed for /lib, hence further modules cannot be loaded.

I'm checking bugzilla, to see if this has been reported, and
will report it, if it hasn't already.

How!? My MDV 2008.0's URPMI knows nothing about this new kernel.
Tho', I did see the security posting announcing its (supposed)
availability over in the gmane ng's.

I downloaded it from secsup.org last night.

You may have to run rpmdrake and manually select it. I've changed a lot
of settings here, so it is automatically included with urpmi auto-select.

Mistake on my part. /lib is on the root filesystem. For some reason I
haven't figured out, most of the modules were missing. Forcing a reinstall
of the rpm (same copy as before), worked fine. Strange part ...
    $ grep kernel-desktop-2.6.22.18-1 /var/log/messages

I have no idea why the modules were not created on the first successfule install
of the rpm, or if they were, what I did that deleted them.

    sigh... :-)

As usual, posting to usenet solves The Problem

After returning from an errand, the new kernel _was_ available to me.
    Probably a migration-across-all-the-mirrors problem.
Although I did not think I was THAT quick on the trigger.

All updated now. Thanks for the response.
