Thread: knemo slows kde logout

  1. knemo slows kde logout

Knemo is that useful tool that shows the "modem lights" tray icons that
flash when the network interfaces are passing data. It's activated via:

    kcontrol -> internet -> monitor -> use-knemo

....though the knemo package might need to be installed first with urpmi.

However, with knemo activated in Mandriva 2008, I find that it slows the
KDE logout. The logout freezes for about 20 seconds with a black screen
and a moveable cursor. I can't find any mention of this problem with a
web search. Anybody got any ideas about how to investigate this?

Confirmed. Reduce the problem it by right clicking on the knemo icon, select
Configure Knemo..., go to the misc tab, select configure sounds & events,
    and turn off all sounds.

Thanks for the confirmation of the bug, but I found that turning off the
sounds didn't reduce the delay for me. I've raised a bug report.

If it was a system service, I'd be able to experiment with starting it
and stopping it from the command line. Dunno if that's possible with a
    kded service, though.

To start/stop it from the command line, use

    dcop kded kded loadModule "knemod"
    dcop kded kded unloadModule "knemod"

Both respond immediately here. It has to be something to do with the
interaction between the knemod module, and other services, such as sound,
since that made quite a difference, on my system.

In kcontrol/Sound & Multimedia/Sound System, do you have the audo device
    set to ALSA?

You could try setting up an icon, to run the above unloadModule function,
and get into the habit of clicking on that, prior to logging out.
