Thread: Updating MDV2005LE

  1. Updating MDV2005LE

I wish to keep 2005LE for some time yet before installing a new version
on an old 866 MHz P3 laptop
Using the 3 CDs I have done the following :

In easyurpmi.zarb.org selected all options for 2005 Community

    then

    # urpmi.update CD1 thereafter #urpmi.update CD2 thereafter
    #urpmi.udate CD3

It did this a few times and each time output was somewhat different

    followed by
    [root@localhost frank]# urpmi --wget --auto-update --auto-select --auto
Unknown option: a <<========== what does this mean ?
The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:
gnome-panel-2.8.3-6mdk.i586 (due to missing libecal.so.6, due to missing
    libedataserver.so.3)
    gnome-telnet-2.4-6mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied gnome-core >= 1.0.0)
    gnome2-2.8.3-2mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied gnome-panel >= 2.8.3)
gnomemeeting-1.2.1-3mdk.i586 (due to missing libebook.so.8, due to
    missing libedataserver.so.3)
    libevolution-data-server3-1.0.4-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied
    evolution-data-server == 1.0.4-2mdk)

finally I get :You may want to update your urpmi database

Can someone give me a hint what went wrong.
I can produce the complete output of the above but don't want to clog
the system with an oversize file.

What puzzles me is that although I selected 2005 community the output
    refers to 2006.0

    TIA for any advice

    Sure you did, NOT.

Old urpm* incompatible with newer release for 2006 maybe.

    And there you are-------------'

    Wrong release selection. :-(

Yep, you might try giving us the output from
    cat /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg
if 2005 had it stored there, if not maybe a "locate urpmi.cfg" can find it.

I think that updates for old versions may not exist on all 'mirrors'; when
I went to just now and chose 2005 for the
version, there weren't many mirrors to choose from.

You need to look for a mirror with the
    /pub/linux/MandrivaLinux/old/updates/2005 path present.

I don't know why you would have got 2006 stuff if you asked for 2005.

I think Mandriva 2008 might work perfectly well on your machine - if you
have at least 512MB RAM. That would be preferable to using a version that
is no longer being provided with security patches.

Tnx Whiskers , I have sent the output of my endeavours in a mesg being
    a reply to Bitwister.

I realise that 2005LE is ancient . But it has reliably performed for 3
yrs and since I shortly will cross the Atlantic and the vast country
beyond I prefer to hold on for the coming 3 months , to extend its
service. In the end an update is not essential , but wanted to pursue
what I have done and doing regularly with 2007.1 on another machine.
I appreciate the support I get via this NG.

Oh, yuck, /devel/2005/ why have devel. use /official/200
There might be development junk left which never made release to /official

After install, I alwasy disable the cd media to keep urpmi from
complaing about mounting cdrom stuff in the Mandrake Control Center.

    Then I go after updates.

You have to delete the 2006 entries from media selections.

curl bites on some sites and has caused me problems on sites
which restricts number of connections an ip can have at one time.
I all ways change Global Options to use wget.

You need to the 2006.0 selections via the Mandrake Control Center.

That's just crazy. 2005LE was the worst Mandrakiva release EVAH!, even
when it was new. Mandriva 2008, in contrast, is really rather good.

    The relevant laptop , P3 - 866MHz , 20GB -HD is of a senior nature. If
its current memory 256 MB could be expanded to say 512MB I'll go for
MDV2008. The currently installed MDV2005LE might be ancient , it never
    ever failed me.
The laptop is an Ultra A440 so I have to find out ........later

I tried out Mandriva 2008 on an oldish Dell P3-650MHz with a 20GB disk and
512MB of RAM. It ran quite nicely with KDE. I'd expect that in 256 it
should still run quite well with XFCE or an even lighter desktop.

Trying just now, I was not offered Wuppertal
among the mirrors for Mdv2005 - nor was I offered "2005 community" as a
    distro, just "2005".

"devel" means "for testing purposes only" in this context; for the
    official release, look in

    and

    and so on.

I'm not sure that the updates available there are complete; the file dates
all seem to be in 2005 but I'm sure that updates were still being issued
    in 2006.

    looks more satisfactory.

The stoned, er starry-eyed penguin put you off? For me, 2005LE and 9.1
stand out as particularly good releases. I'd rate 10.0 as the worst.

Yes , the RAM needs to be at least 512MB for KDE ; I'll try to find out
if the machine can have that. Failing that I can follow your advice

I have a Gateway Pentium 4 with only 128 MB Memory. It is still
running 2006, simply because 2007.1 would install but not run
properly with that amount of RAM. If I remember right, sound and
a couple of other things worked better under 2006, but 2005LE
worked fine for my main purposes. Noise-making is not what I
    buy a computer for.

    Cheers!

Well, my aged Slackware knocking-about box runs KDE really nicely with
only 384MB, but even in 256 there are some WMs that run pretty fast. I
like fvwm-crystal myself, it's fast and spartan and yet convenient to use.

    Further to mine ,above:

Max DRAM for the above Ultra A440 laptop is 256 MB ,which is installed
,so for the coming 3 months while away from base ,I'll keep MDV2005LE,
but intend trying MDV2008 with a light GUI later.in the meantime I'll
try to update from a reliable repository ......tnx Whisker.
