That's odd as it worked perfectly here for that exact NG, version 1.5.07

Could be the newer versions are broken which is another reason why not
to upgrade an application just because there is a newer version.

I uninstalled then reinstalled Thunderbird and got it to show images, with
the exception of yenc encoded files. Another quirk is that large images
can't be sized down in the preview pane. You have to scroll around the
image to try to figure out what it is. Is there a way to zoom out in the
viewer?

Oh I'm the wrong person to ask that as I don't do USENET binaries. I
don't have any reason nor need to.

Having said that I'm sure there are a number of tweaks available through
the authors.
