Thread: Running Wine causes a reboot.

  1. Running Wine causes a reboot.

This is new and very unexpected. Using Mandriva 2007.1.

My normal reaction is to do an "update" of my system or even a reinstall,
but this is all happening in my home directory. How can I catch what is
triggering it, without losing it immediately before I can save it to a
file? I can try strace, but only if it writes to the file line by line,
and not at the end. I have been caught before by not unmounting media,
forgetting that even if the file is theoretically written, it isn't on the
    media straightaway.

Turning off hard drive write caching ...
    hdparm -W 0 /dev/hda
    may help.

Thanks David. Actually it doesn't cause a reboot - it logs me out.

Most of the results I found by googling were to do with logging out of a Web
forum. The only relevant one suggested that the shell was crashing, and
suggested trying with zsh;. That made no difference, but did say that my
..bash_history was corrupt. Deleting the file made no difference.

I then logged out of KDE and into GNOME. Still no change, which seems to
    rule out any KDE files.

What are you running under wine?

That did nothing, but by tutning off caching I was able to get an output of
strace (below). I can see the reboot, but interpreting the steps is over
    my head.

First boot to single level mode, or from a live cd, and run fsck
    on the file systems.

Then, (with hd write caching off), try
    $ rm -rf ~/.wine
    $ nohup strace -f -F -s 1024 -otestoutput.txt wineprefixcreate

It will take a while. On my system, the above takes about 30 seconds,
and generates 42M of output in ~/testoutput.txt

Tracing back through the output, to find the error triggering the
    reboot request, will be tedious.

I'm suspecting a permission problem on a device. What is your
security level set to? Post output of "cat /etc/sysconfig/msec"

If Wine logs you out when you run it, you're running into
an X server bug. Perhaps you're using a proprietary
driver that's mismatched to your kernel, or maybe
it's just a plain old X bug. Does glxgears work properly for you?

Since then, Privoxy said it had permission problems and there was another
issue, so I reinstalled and fixed the lot. I am used to doing it. I don't
learn much that way, but I get the system up and working a lot quicker. I
like getting my hands dirty trying out different things, but I am totally
    lost with a hitch.

Yes, I am using Mandriva's 2.6.17.14-multimedia kernel with the latest
NVidia driver. I found that half my config problems were caused by trying
to run the NVidia packages provided by Mandriva or the PLF (actually, only
the PLF ones tried to work,) and in addition, there are no dkms interface
RPMs for this kernel. This matters, because my sound card works with the
multimedia kernel but not with the basic 2.6.17.13 kernel. It is a
you-beaut, straight out of the factory Gigabyte mobo by NV. The onboard
NIC almost worked, but the old plugin one worked better.
