Thread: Cannot get Java working

  1. Cannot get Java working

SeaMonkey 1.1 on Mandriva Linux 2007
    Jre 1.5.0.8, 1.5.0.10, 1.5.0.11 and now 6u1

    When I go to https://jobsearch.gov.au/Login/Login.aspx?WHCode=0 I get a
message saying "This page contains information of a type
(application/x-java-vm) that can only be viewed with the appropriate
plug-in .........Click OK to download Plugin .......OK ...CANCEL" and
clicking OK takes me to the http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp from
where I can download JRE 6u1.

As the list of Java's that I've got installed shows, I tried this, but I
    must be doing something wrong!

As root, I installed Java to /usr/java/jre1.6.0_01 and I've made a
    symlink at /home/daniel/internet/seamonkey/seamonkey_1.1/plugins which was:-

    ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

    but still no go.

    Any body got any ideas???

    TIA

    Daniel

Use a sepatate browser and url to verify java install.

    http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
    http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm

Thanks for getting back to me so quick, Bit Twister.

I just tried to use Konqueror to check the java site, but it appears I
need to set the proxy setting so that my ISP will let me out into the world.

Got to go out, so check back in later.

    Tks.

Search the archives from about two months ago for a post by me called
'Java in Konqueror driving me nuts'. There is a total solution in that
thread, although the java version at the time was jre1.5.0_10.

Sorry, Aardvark, doing a search on your name only brings up your
    messages back to 28 Mar.

Can you give me the nuts and bolts of the problem/solution?

Try making use of Google's archive (the really useful part of Google
    Groups); go to and put

    alt.os.linux.mandriva

in the box for 'Return only messages from the group at this location' and

Java in Konqueror driving me nuts

in the box for 'Return only messages where the subject contains' and then
click on the 'Google search' button.

In fact, if you'd searched for the word java in the *.mandriva groups
from the 'Google Advanced Groups Search' page before posting your
question, you might have found that you didn't need to post a question at
all ... which is why "Google is your friend" still has a touch of truth.

I assume you are criticizing Whiskers for his "preaching" tone?

If so, I see nothing wrong with his post.
    People come here seeking advice.
They may or may not know how to use a search engine.

Thanks for that! Using Aardvarks instructions there, I made a symlink
for Firefox to Java, but I still cannot get out onto the net using
Firefox or Konqueror, so I guess I have to look at the possibility of a
    firewall stopping outside access.

    A problem for another day.

I'm pleased that I could be of help. That java thing was the first thing I
learned for myself in Linux and took quite a bit of research to get the
correct instructions (well, at the time). People have helped me and that
of course obliges me to pass on any knowledge I acquire (however little :-))

    Always pass a favour forward.

You are clearly getting out on the net using Seamonkey, so I don't think
it's likely that a firewall is blocking web browsers as such, and Linux
doesn't usually control web surfing by specifying which programs can do
it. A 'proxy server' setting is more likely; if your ISP requires that
you use their proxy, then you'll have to make sure that all the browsers
you want to use are set up to use that proxy. None of that has anything to
do with Java, of course )
