Thread: Can't start Mandriva

  1. Can't start Mandriva

    Mdv 2007 Free, KDE 3.5.
    Went to bed last night and left the PC happily running although the
    monitor was switched off. The wife woke me this morning asking me what my
    password for the computer was. Thinking this was a strange question (when
    the machine is on it logs automatically into my identity so no p/w
    required).

    When I got in front of the computer it was sitting at the login screen, so
    I typed in my username and password and hit the enter button. I got the
    nVidia splash screen and then was taken straight back to the login screen.

    I've rebooted, tried using different sessions, even tried to log into my
    son's identity (set up on this machine) and all to no avail. All I get is
    the login screen.

    I have no idea where to look or what to do to fix this. Totally stumped.
    Can someone please tell me how to trace whatever might be at fault? I'm at
    present using Ubuntu (this machine is dual boot Mdv/Ubuntu) so it's
    definitely not a hardware problem.

    The only change to my Mandriva installation was on Friday I upgraded my
    kernel from 2.6.17-5 to 2.6.17-11, also installed 2.6.17-11 kernel source
    and reinstalled my nVidia drivers against the new kernel source.

    Any help gladly accepted.

    How did you reinstall your nVidia drivers? Normally after adding a new
    kernel to a system, you have to re-boot the system to start actually using
    the new kernel - and in my experience, Mandriva will automatically
    re-compile the nVidia stuff at that point, if the appropriate source
    package is installed. That is certainly what has happened on my systems,
    every time.

    If you have re-compiled nVidia against the new kernel source but haven't
    re-booted the system, or are still using the pld kernel for some other
    reason, then your graphics system almost certainly won't work.

    So; if you haven't already, reboot now!

    Sounds like you screwed up the nVidia drivers somehow and now you can't
    start X. (FWIW, if you're getting the login screen, Mandriva *is* starting,
    but X and KDE or whatever you use for a desktop isn't).

    How did you "reinstall the drivers"? Did you go to the nVidia site and
    download the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run utility?

    If not, go to http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp , download
    the utility and run it. You should be able to start X after that.

    I gather you're using run level 5, and something is causing the window
    manager to crash.

    Boot to run level 3.

    If you're using lilo, when the os selection screen shows up, press the
    cursor down, and then up, to stop the timer.

    You should now have your default os selection showing up at the bottom.

    Add a space, and then the number 3, to boot to run level 3. Watch
    for any error messages during the boot up.

    At the login prompt, log in with your userid, and then password.

    At the > prompt, enter "startx" without the quotes. Watch for error
    messages. Use mc, or whatever text viewer you have, to check out
    ~/.xsession-errors, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log (may need to "su -" to
    root to view this). for error messages.

    If the error messages don't make the fix obvious, post them here.

    Just verified that this still works, moving my system to the latest kernel
    2.6.17-13

    I use grub. I did notice when I attempted to reboot into Mandriva that
    grub had gone text on me. Usually I have grub in graphical mode. The
    verbosity while booting is unchanged.

    My nVidia card takes the legacy driver (7184). I keep a copy of
    NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7184-pkg1.run in a folder on my desktop. I open a
    console and su to init 3 then navigate to the nVidia folder and sh the
    ..run file. Having done that I reboot back into Mandriva.

    I've reinstalled the nVidia drivers a number of times in the last few
    weeks since I've been ****ing round with Beryl (which definitely has to
    go- more trouble 'n it's worth), although Friday was the first time for a

    Nope. Already had the requisite driver (from nVidia) saved on my HD. My
    package is the legacy one NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7184-pkg1.run.

    su to init 3 then navigate to the .run file and sh it. When it was done I
    rebooted.

    Is this a tablet pc? If not, try commenting out the part of
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf dealing with the wacom input device.
    If it is a tablet pc, what does "ls -lA /dev/w*" show?

    If this doesn't fix the problem, right after logging in,
    run "dmesg>dmesg.txt", and post the results of that.

    LOL no it's a desktop PC. Since I first started using Mdv and was editing
    xorg.conf I wondered why the hell I had tablet PC entries. Just assumed
    they were standard. They bring up errors but don't (seem to) affect
    performance. Would it be ok just to delete these entries altogether?

    Yes. Also check /var/log/syslog, after a failed startx, for any
    related error messages. /var/log/messages, /var/log/kernel/errors too.

    Actually, reading posts you reply to is usually a good idea.
    a) The login screen comes up, so his NVIDIA driver is working.
    b)He explicitly stated that he rebooted.

    I would mount the / Mandriva partition from Ubuntu
    (mkdir /mnt/mdv
    mount /dev/hda7 /mnt/mdv
    where you should use the partition that actually contains your Mandriva /
    directory.
    Then look at /etc/passwd to see if it still exists. And look at /etc/shadow
    to make sure it exists and is not corrupted.

    Then I would try booting up mandriva, but when the lilo screen comes up say
    linux 3
    ( or whatever the name of your mandriva bootup is-- you want to go into
    runlevel 3 not 5.) Now try logging in and look for error messages.
    See if you can log on as root.

    If nothing works, go back to ubuntu remount the mandriva / and look at the
    log files in /mnt/mdv/var/log ( esp messages) to see if there is a hint.

    What happens if you reboot, and instead of going right into runlevel 5,
    go into runlevel 3, login to a terminal session(as you and as root) and
    then do a startx?

    Arrgh, I've only had one pot of coffee and for whatever reason, when I
    saw your post it was the only one showing up, but when I refreshed
    everything else showed up. Anyway, do you happen to have gnome installed
    as well? If so, can you get into a gnome desktop?

    I get the nVidia splash screen then it drops back to the login screen.

    Try commenting out the loading of the modules glx and dri in
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf, in the Module section.

    That should at least get you back into x, without 3d effects,
    or direct rendering.

    Once that's working, make a backup of xorg.conf, and go through
    the nividia drivers install again, paying close attention for
    any errors related to the above two modules.

    Compare them to the ones on Ubuntu ( they are universal in form, though not
    in content). Ie, look to make sure that root and the user you are logged in
    as are in both files, and that the entries "look normal" (eg in comparison
    with Ubuntu).

    IF you can log in in runlevel 3, then that indicates that the problem is
    with X not with the system. Looking at the output from X I cannot see
    anything particularly weird there.

    If you can log in in runlevel 3 as user, then try doing
    startx 2>/tmp/X.user
    so you can see the error messages that come up. If this comes up OK, then
    there is some problem with gdm/kdm/xdm If not, then there is some problem
    with X as a whole.

    Ah, why read a post when you pronounce so much more authoritatively without
    reading it. :-). Anyway, unfortunately I do not do grub, so do not know how
    to advise you to go into runlevel 3. But from other posts you apparently
    know anyway, so you would not have needed my advice anyway.

    Go into /etc/sysconfig/network and remove the IPV6 lines. Or put in
    NETWORKING_IPV6="no"

    I cannot see any problem in the that file you posted. Maybe others can.

    I have removed it since it takes up so much room. (It was good however to
    post it).
    Mind you I do not really like the warning messages below, but Have no idea
    what a DDC of 0 means.
