Thread: Security updates for 2006.0 release

  1. Security updates for 2006.0 release

I have read the 'Mandriva Product Lifetime Policy' web page
    [http://www.mandriva.com/en/security/productlifetime] , but am still
unclear as to whether this also refers to normal security updates. If the
above policy does not include security updates what is the time before
these also stop for given release?

18 months seems short for stopping all support for consumer editions of this
distro, but I suppose since the distro is provided free of charge, as
against the costly MS products, this makes some sort of sense. Are there
security and other patches available from 3rd parties for releases no
    longer supported by Mandriva?

On this NG I have seen backports mentioned - could someone please give me
details from where such information can be found and any pitfalls connected
with using such updates of various applications? Also, contrib-updates? - I
have not seen such info on any of the Mandriva mirrors I have used.

    TIA

    Rob

It seems to me that you used the Subject line as part of your
article; I will play nicely and repeat it here in the body of my
article. In the future, please do your typing in the body of your
article. You were apparently asking about security updates for
    Mandriva 2006.

The End Of Life (EOL) for Mandriva Linux 2006 was April 13, 2007.
That means that Mandriva will not provide any updates whatsoever for
Mandriva Linux 2006 after April 13, 2007. Mandriva 2006 is dead and
frozen in time as of April 13, 2007.

I doubt it, but the maintainers of various packages continue to
improve their packages; they also provide updates for their packages.
The best thing to do for an end user is to install the latest version
of Mandriva, install the updates, etc.

    snip

When the 'product lifetime' ends, Mandriva cease to provide any updates,
fixes, patches, or anything else. The best thing to do, and the easiest,
is to make a fresh installation of the latest release, and as soon as you
have that running nicely and up-to-date, transfer your data to the new
system. (I keep my data in a partition of its own which I can 'mount' in
whichever version of whichever distro I'm currently using - with 'links'
to the appropriate places in the /home directory of that system).

    You are a ****ing tool.
Apart from that you are an absolute wanker.

The OP made a legitimate post and you seem to think you are some
