It's part of Microsoft's commitment to open source.

If you look carefully, most of those Linux entries are not actually
hotmail. They're things like hotmail.com.org, which is really the domain
    com.org, not hotmail.com.

There are several that appear to be redirect servers in various other
domains, and they don't seem to be registered to Microsoft.

For example, www.hotmail.com.mx is registered to one Domain Name:
    hotmail.com.mx

    Created On: 25-oct-2005
    Expiration Date: 24-oct-2009
    Last Updated On: 26-sep-2008
    Registrar: NIC Mexico
    URL: http://www.nic.mx

    Registrant:
    Name: Mariscal
    City: Ciudad del Este
    State: Alto Parana
    Country: Paraguay

The only ones that seem to be valid are gfx1.hotmail.com and
gfx2.hotmail.com, both of which resolve to Akamai IP addresses, which means
they are likely graphics server provided by Akamai using their distributed
    hosting services.
