simms around, then i came accross 512MB (two 256MB simms) and was
wondering if this would work ok.

The 168 pin simms will not fit the slots.....

168 makes me think of DIMMs.

My understanding is that 16Mx36 (64M) modules (54-24123-AA) are the
    limit. In my 21164/ev5 (XLT-300), I utilize 4x64 in bank-0.

The memory config for the Alphastation 600 required 8 simms per bank, there
were two memory risers/towers 4 chips would go in each. So in other words a
successful 128MB upgrade would have meant 8 x 16MB chips. The total
supported memory maximum was 1GB meaning 4 fully loaded 256MB banks or
    32x16MB chips.

I think 2 x 256MB chips would be unlikely to work.

    Cheers,

    James
