Hi,
After a bit of messing around I got Debian 3.0 installed on my alpha. The
problem now is that the speed of X is so slow, it is effectively unusable.
I've let it gather dust for a while, but would like to get it up and running.
The speed would be equivalent to running Redhat 5 on a Sun4c (IPC!), maybe
slower. I'm using a VGA card (trident), but the TGA card I had was not much
better. I've got 64M ram, which I thought may be the problem. I've got 3 more
16M dimm to but in bank 2 for I can bring it up to 128M ram, but I'm not sure
which dimms I can use ? It says it uses 5V JEDEC ECC168 pin dimms , so I was
wondering if I could use sparc 4/5 dimms. They are 5V, 168 pin, fast page
mode parity dimms. I'm in Australia, so it is a bit harder for me to order
from the US, otherwise I would just buy what I needed rather than try to find
some equivalent I can source locally. Is Debian very slow with 64M ram? Could
it be the video card (I had a matrox millenium 1, but that seemed to be
problematic on alphas from what I had read). Could it be my ram is dodgey (it
is the original ram)? Out of X, speed is not noticebly slow, kernel recompiles
are ~30min- 1hr, I haven't done it for a while, so can't remember clearly (I
complied TGA support into the kernel)?

Does anyone run Netbsd or Freebsd on their systems? Are they Ok to use ? (I
used to run netbsd on pmax decstations - they even ran X much better than
what I'm seeing on my alpha)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Paul
