OLPC Pilot: Preparations

,----[ Quote ]
| Janajyoti Lower Secondary School, Ugratara-8, Janagal, Kavre - the Department
| of Education, Ministry of Education had already provided us the name of
| school where it'd be best to do a pilot. But the real work began as we
| received 25 B4 XOs sent in by OLPC International. It was almost at the
| beginning of the month, but we decided to keep the news little low. Afterall
| it was just a pilot and not a major distribution. All we wanted was to make
| it work rather than have big publicity. However, all the active volunteers
| knew about this and we had the news quite goin in our IRC too.

Laptop Training Begins in Peru

,----[ Quote ]
| This week, teachers from remote rural villages in Peru are gathering in
| several regional cities to learn how to do their jobs via One Laptop per
| Child (OLPC) machines distributed to their pupils. Peru is now engaging in
| the world's most ambitious OLPC deployment: some 400,000 machines are headed
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
| to the Andean nation's poorest and remotest schools--about 6,000 schools in
| all. The first 25,000 of these machines are now being inventoried in a Lima
| warehouse and are poised for shipment to the interior. * * *

Impressions of an XO laptop

,----[ Quote ]
| I’ve had two or three days to look over my XO and I’ll admit up front that I
| really love it. I don’t know all the ins and outs of it, and it will take me
| some time to get used to the way things work, but I believe I’ll be keeping
| this one for a very long time. *

Feature: Hacking the XO laptop

,----[ Quote ]
| We recently wrote about the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) initiative and
| specifically the XO laptop. Basically, the XO is a $200 laptop specially
| designed for use in developing nations. The laptop instantly recognizes other
| XO’s and connects to them, forming a mesh network, which then enables
| collaboration and even shared internet access in areas that traditionally
| can’t afford laptops and/or connectivity to the internet. They’re also
| specially designed for viewing in bright sunlight, and are incredibly
| durable. We’re already hearing about the positive impact these laptops are
| having on small villages, and more are being delivered daily. * * * *
