  1. System Log File / Shutdown Mystery

I have a colocated Red Hat Enterprise Linux box about 60 miles away (not
    under my physical control).

I noticed one day that the "uptime" command showed that the server had been
rebooted about 6 hours earlier (the uptime should have been 14 days).

    The log files showed:

    a)A startup,

b)With no shutdown previously (normally the log files record various daemons
shutting down--this info was not there).

c)With checking of hard disks due to them being not checked for 14 days.

    This is odd.

    Questions:

a)Is there any way to shut down a server such that the log files are not
written with shutdown notifications for various daemons? (I.e. is there a
    "quick" or "instant" shutdown?).

b)If the hard disks are due to be checked due to BOTH time since last check
AND an unclean shutdown, what will the log files show? (I.e. will the log
files announce both events, the check due to time, or the check due to
    unclean shutdown?).

My best guess at this time is that:

a)The power to the server failed, AND

b)The hard disk checks showed a hard disk check due to time since last check
when in fact there was also an unclean shutdown.

Is this reasonable? Any other ideas?
