And since Scott Douglas is a highly respected, technically competent
reviewer, clearly we should take his word over Roy's.
Impressive. Of course, I for one would want a few more details
on how Vista bests Linux here; clearly, Vista is in fact besting
Linux easily (if only in gross sales), but I want to know why, so
that we can improve Vista.
To be sure, a Google on
"Scott Douglas Gutsy Gibbon review"
coughed up
http://meanderingpassage.com/2007/11/07/ars-technica-reviews-ubuntu-710/
but this includes excerpts from a review written by someone
named Ryan Paul, at
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/ubuntu-gutsy-gibbon-review.ars/1 .
The review is long and somewhat meandering. It includes a number
of captured pictures.
* A new breed of ape
* Installing Ubuntu 7.10
* Updating from Ubuntu 7.04 to Ubuntu 7.10
* Visual Effects
* Bundled software
* Firefox customizations in Ubuntu
* Desktop search
* Screen and Graphics Preferences utility
* Additional new features
* Final thoughts
His absolute last paragraph:
Linux is now an appealing choice for many users who
would never have considered making the switch a few
years ago. Distributions have improved at an astounding
pace, and Ubuntu leads the pack on the desktop. Ubuntu
7.10 provides an effective and usable Linux platform
that has a lot to offer a more mainstream audience as
well as Linux enthusiasts.
clearly shows his bias -- and his technical sloppiness, but
that's more or less normal; Linux is indeed an appealing
choice for those who need just the kernel, but Ubuntu is
an even more appealing choice built around Linux for those
who need a complete solution.
A Google for
"Gutsy Gibbon sucks"
coughed up http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=591848
whose initiating post starts out:
I can't believe how many problems I'm having
here! Perhaps I should re-install from scratch instead
of doing an upgrade, unless someone knows the solutions
to my problems...
1) Opera won't let me log into ubuntuforums.org Every
time I log in, it doesn't log me in. I end up back at
the login screen
2) Firefox closes when I start making a post on
ubuntuforums.org I'm finally having success using
Konqueror. But why is Firefox closing?
3) I cannot install compizconfig-settings-manager
4) Where the hell did Thunderbird go? It turned into a big red X
4 pages of responses follow this initial post. I'm not
about to check all of them but at least two suggest
that the original poster look at other areas (Opera
isn't freeware, for example).

Re: Some More Reviews of the Latest Ubuntu and Latest Fedora Linux
On my personal experiences upgrading and fresh installs on about 6
machines so far, overall Gutsy is slightly down from Feisty. The
upgrades have been slightly smoother, and the fresh installations are
about the same. Existing problems seem mostly unaffected, and it's
picked up a couple of annoying new glitches. Most annoying of the
current problems involves Java from Firefox.
However, I still wish they'd focus on making it consistently better
with each release. I feel like they just want to make it different on
schedule, and there are too many annoying glitches in the process.
Gutsy is sometimes annoying enough to drive me back to Windows for a
break, which is not the Linux experience I've been enjoying with
Ubuntu.

Yes, I have seen no vast improvement over Feisty at all really, I found
the compiz setup needed some fiddling with and a download or two and the
NTP function needed a download... very small and quick so no reason not
to include it - but the compiz stuff could be confusing to a newcomer so
I really think they should put some effort into including the complete
thing or add it to the restricted drivers pack or something, make it a
single click package so the user gets the correct stuff.

For a Ubuntu installation that I have, I'm still waiting for 8.04, which is
long-term support. It should be as solid as 6.06, which was followed by an
Edgy (mind case) release.
