We have many ideas. Try this one for example: switch to a console
(Ctrl-Alt-F1) and type:
less /var/log/XFree86.0.log
and look for lines starting with (EE)
And next time something doesn't work as expected, check the files in
/var/log - they usually tell you what's wrong.

Re: freaked out...X issue?
I had a similar problem regarding X during my switch to FC3. Here is
what I did to get it working
a) go to runlevel 3
b) run system-config-display --reconfigure
--set-resolution=your_resolution
c) restart or go to runlevel 5
I guess the config files had to be recreated...

I know very little about Fedora Core, so I can't help there.
I *can* tell you that KNOPPIX can be installed onto your hard disk;
before Ubuntu came out it was considered the easiest way to install
Debian on an ix86 box.
The exact procedure for installing KNOPPIX changed a while back. If
you're interested, tell me what version you are using and I'll explain
how to install it.
