    You should look at the log files in /var/log to see if anything is indicated
    there. Then start investigating the integrity of the files, e.g.:

    $ file `which updatedb`
    /usr/bin/updatedb: symbolic link to slocate

    $ file `which slocate`
    /usr/bin/slocate: setgid ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1
    (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.0.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

    Then record the action for later diagnostics:

    # strace -o /tmp/strace_output updatedb

    Of course the info of primary interest will located toward the end of the
    (several MB) text file you've created, and can be examined after the reboot
    occurs, if your system is configured to retain files in /tmp, otherwise save
    the output elsewhere.
