  1. KDE daemon pops up at boot time

As soon as KDE comes up on my Mandriva 2006 system, the KDE Daemon
rfeproduces itself non-stop. How can I get rid of it? The dialog says
'crash caused by signal 8 (SIGFPB). I managed to catch the backtrace.
    See below.
    TIA

It seems this is Kat Desktop Search engine.
    You can disable it in
KDE Control Center -> KDE Components -> Service Manager

You just about have to disable Kat if you want your computer to do anything
    but index for Kat.

kat doesn't appear in the service list on this machine. I have to try and
grap its icon in the task bar and ger it to quit. I cannot find from where
    it is being started up.

Most likely it's being started by /kdeinit,/ and it should normally have an
option - at least: that would be only logical - to disable it at KDE
    start-up time.

However, the recommended approach is to just uninstall it.

    Have you tried urpme kat?
Watch what it removes though, Mandriva has in the past
had a problem with removing the kitchen sink to get rid
of an unwanted program. You may later have to go back
and reload some stuff, so watch what urpmi removes.

    Another way - System/Configuration/Packaging/remove software.
