Thread: K3B will not write DVD+R disk

  1. K3B will not write DVD+R disk

I just installed SuSE 10.0 Open Source. I'm running:
    KDE 3.5
    k3b-0.12.3-9
    dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8-9
    cdrecord-2.01-7
    mkisofs-2.01-7
    cdrdao-1.1.9-8

I can burn (as a regular user) to CD and to DVD+RW, but when I try to burn
to DVD+R I get the error message:
    :-( unable to WRITE@LBA=0h: Input/output error
    :-( write failed: Input/output error
I get this error as a regular user and when I try to burn as root.

Following is the complete debug output:

I have found a lot of posts that talk about this problem, but I havn't found
anyone with a fix. A lot of the problems said it worked OK with kernel
2.6.9 and stopped working when they upgraded to 2.6.10. Well, as you can
see in the debug output I'm running 2.6.13.

Also, it always wants to write at 1x, even on the successful DVD+RW. Don't
know why it is so slow.

If anyone knows the fix to this problem I'd sure like to know. I just got
k9copy to actually write to my DVD+RW and I'd like to start using DVD+R
    disks.

    Thanks,

    Dan

The speed problem might be related to the firmware on the DVD drive and
the discs you are using. The drive attempts to identify the brand and
type of disc and then reports available writing speeds back to the calling
s/w. My LG drive would only write at 2x to some supposedly 8x Ritec
and Gigatain discs. After flashing the drives firmware it now writes to
    those same discs at 4x.

This was not a FreeBSD or growisfs problem as evidenced by exactly the
same behaviour under WinXP and Win98 with Nero and Roxio. They also now
write at 4x since the firmware update.

I believe somewhere in the documentation it states that you are required to
    run cdrecord-prodvd for DVD+R support.
