It's still set before /etc/X11/Xsession is sourced. The thing is,
neither /etc/X11/Xsession nor /etc/X11/Xsession.d/* is unsetting it. It
doesn't show up anywhere.
So it could be that it's the different startup methods of startx vs.
kdm. I'll try with xdm and gdm tomorrow.
