It is my understanding the that 6.1 isn't supported on any 8xx model.
    You need to be on a Power5 or 6 system ( models 5xx )

    http://www-
    304.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/upgrade/v6r1/hardware.html

Models supported by IBM i 6.1, January 2008 (updated June 2008)
    IBM i 6.1 (formerly i5/OS V6R1) is supported on models 60X, 61X, M15,
    M25, M50, MMA, FHA, 515, 520, 525, 550, 570, 595, 800, 810, 825, 870, and
    890. It is not supported on iSeries models 270, 820, 830, 840, SB2, SB3
or earlier members of the iSeries family.

    for the upgrade:

done one upgrade on a small 520 , it takes much more time to prepare to
upgrade, and I would advise to take this time,I did resolve some problems
    in this time.

the upgrade itself did not take much more time than the upgrade to V5R4,
did need 2 hours forr program conversion.
