Thread: High CPU load but CPU idle

  1. High CPU load but CPU idle

We have HP-UX 11.0 on N class machines.
Apache does not run correctly on this machine and HP has no clue why
the OS acts this way. CPU 0 has a very high load but is idle.
    Cpu states:
CPU LOAD USER NICE SYS IDLE BLOCK SWAIT INTR SSYS
    0 41.95 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 100.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.0%
    0.0%
Anyone have any ideas what's going on?
Any time this happens our only option is to reboot.

I assume you know 11.00 is -1 if not -2 now for an OS. What
    does top show?

See if you can load a trial version of glance and look at
the higher running processes as identified by top and check
    their wait states, I/O, etc.

    I'm talking about the OS.
HP support has looked at the issue and they've never seen it.
    here's the output from top.

Does it happen on this server only? What is P/N of this server? Have you
upgraded it since you bought it?

Get a system dump and give it to your HP support.

BTW, is cpu 0 busy handling interrupts?

    11.0 went EOL recently IIRC.

Which version of Apache - is it a threaded one?

I thought I recalled bugs in reporting load averages, but nothing
concrete came to mind. I did a quick check in some of the patch
catalog and came across the following with hits for a search on "load
    average"

    3 PHCO_25081 uptime(1) cumulative patch
    3 PHCO_26020 top(1) cumulative patch
    3 PHKL_18543 PM/VM/UFS/async/scsi/io/DMAPI/JFS/perf patch
    old 3 PHKL_19315 Fix over-subscription in gang-scheduling
old 3 PHKL_21700 cumulative pstat fix and optimization
3 PHKL_23901 remove stopped threads from load averages

That last one in particular looked intriguing. If you wanted to
install all of them, here is the full list of dependencies:

    These patches have non-patch dependencies:

    PHKL_18543 PHKL_31932 PHKL_34341 PHKL_35742 PHKL_35828

These patches have special installation instructions:

    PHCO_34763 PHKL_18543 PHKL_20016 PHKL_21549 PHKL_23901 PHKL_34341

    These patches have been updated:

    PHKL_19315 replaced by PHKL_21549
    PHKL_21700 replaced by PHKL_31932

Status Rating Catalog Text (16 patches 38MB)

    3 PHCO_23651 fsck_vxfs(1M) cumulative patch
    3 PHCO_25081 uptime(1) cumulative patch

3 PHKL_19202 fsadm panic if extending root on 11.x
    3 PHKL_20016 2nd CPU not recognized in G70/H70/I70
3 PHKL_21549 Cumulative gang scheduling patch
3 PHKL_23901 remove stopped threads from load averages
2 PHKL_31932 pstat patch, long command line storage
2 PHKL_32986 VxFS sendfile reallocation panic
    2 PHKL_34341 Probe,IDDS,PM,VM,PA-8700,AIO,T600,FS,PDC,CLK
    2 PHKL_35742 LVM Cumulative Patch
    1 PHKL_35828 callout/abstime/sleep/mpctl/vfork patch

I'll leave searching the patch texts as an excercise to the reader.

Whether the patches above would address your issue I've no idea. Back
when an N Class and 11.0 were "happening" we were running Zeus for
    benchmarking

Are you looking for an answer as to why Apache is not running
correctly? If so, then what exactly is Apache doing or not doing?

Or is the problem that top is not reporting what you exected to see?
