  1. Advice for Sick HP7978 Tape Drive

    I have a 7978 that passes power-on self-test, but fails to keep
tension on the tape when LOAD is pressed. I ran a Selftest 60 from the
front panel and got a (hex) 60, 53 error indication. The Service
Manual says "Servo Controller shutdown", which makes sense given the
    tension symptom.

This seems to be an aging problem with 7978s (and others?). Questions
for the list are: 1) have you seen this problem, and if so 2) did you
find a successful solution? This is a home machine, I haven't worked
on MPE professionally in 9 years. So I'm not inclined to call in one
    of the hardware support vendors.

    TIA,

    Lee Courtney

Lee, Try and run test 45.. Buffer Arm Test and also test 46 Speed
encoder test. You must move both of them and watch the display for
    change.
