As Trax suggested, unless you have an optical mouse, your mouse is dirty.
Its time to clean it.
Most mice I've seen had a retainer ring surrounding the ball. You rotate
the ring a quarter turn counterclockwise, turn it over and the ring and
ball should fall out in your hand.
I usually use a thin-bladed pocket knife to peel the junk off of the
rollers inside. Then blow out any loose debris and re-assemble.
If you haven't cleaned it in a while, it can make a world of difference.
