Somehow a hard crash broke my whatis database. The following commands
always yield "nothing appropriate":

whatis
apropos
man -k

I've run "makewhatis -w" to no avail. I even tried deleted the whatis
database, then remaking it, and it doesn't help. When I make it with -v,
it's generating quite a bit of data.

"man --path" gives the very reasonable looking

/usr/share/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/usr/local/man:/usr/man

as output. Any clues?

Running Mandrake 9.2. TIA,
