Hi. I'm looking for a graphics program that runs on linux
that's capable of manipulating Windows bitmap (.bmp) files.
I have a bunch of them I need to deal with for work . . .

$ file *.bmp
a.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 8
b.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 16
c.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 8
d.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 32
e.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 16
f.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 256 x 256 x 8
(etc.)

I've tried the GIMP, ImageMagick, xv, etc. All have no problem
with the "x 8" and "x 32" files; but all of them choke on the
"x 16" files.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much.
