  1. crontab jobs fail after a month or so

I have a set of crontab jobs that run every 10 minutes and a rsync job
    once a day.

One of the scripts uses rsync to copy backup files. This script will
run for say 20 days then fail. There are no log messages. The only
solution seems to be to re-boot the machine, then all is fine.

    Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if the cron process is still running?

    ps -ef | fgrep cron

Also, look for log entries from cron:

    fgrep cron /var/log/messages | tail

    Finally, instead of rebooting, try:

    /etc/init.d/cron restart

(depending on which version of cron you have, the command name may be
    a bit different, myne is /etc/init.d/vixie-cron )
